Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for safely operating the locomotive pulling varying numbers of attached cars mixed types and sizes of train cars heavy loads and cargo which is sometimes fragile within Yard Facility Terminal following rules and regulations of the Federal Railroad Administration. To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and ability required. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Must have one (1) years of industry related experience as locomotive engineer Or in lieu of experience two (2) years as switch operator
  • Must be able to understand operating and safety rules prescribed by FRA (Federal Railroad Administration)
  • Must understand and follow all railroad signals speed limits and general regulations
  • Must successfully complete Locomotive Engineer Training & Licensing examinations to receive companyissued engineers license within 90 days from hire
  • Must have clean and valid DL (Drivers License)
  • Must be able to read write and speak Intermediate English
  • Must have the ability to function effectively in a fast paced team oriented work environment
  • Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees
  • Must have the ability to think logically follow procedures instructions and make sound decisions
  • Must be able to work (flexible hours) extended hours including nights overtime weekends and holidays; may only work 12 hours per day as required by FRA (Federal Railroad Administration)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES PRIMARY

  • Perform all functions in accordance with operation and safety guidelines
  • Follow the Railroad Rules and Regulations as required by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Department of Transportation (DOT) & Jacintoport to assure the a safe operations
  • Inspect all equipment on engine such as brakes oil water and lights to assure that locomotive is operational in compliance with Federal safety standards prior to movement
  • Conduct brake examinations test each time before operating locomotive
  • Walk rail track daily and report any detected damage or defective equipment such as broken rail or defective track
  • Communicate with the PTRA (Port Terminal Railroad Association) to request and obtain granted approval track time document time granted accordingly
  • Operate locomotive back and forth to switch and couple empty or loaded railcars boxcars and hoppers by operating the air brakes throttle and other equipment
  • Maintain communicating with Switch Operator using hand and safety signals or twoway handheld radio when coupling and uncoupling railcars or when railcar distance notification is needed
  • Maintain communication with the Designated Supervisor of Locomotive Engineer (DSLE) to verify what railcars or hoppers are going to be moved throughout the day for the Bags or Resin Warehouse
  • Complete inspection documents and define all service hours performed on locomotive on a daily basis
  • Ensure that documentation including procedure manuals and logbooks are in locomotive and available for staff to use
  • Perform designated switch task of assembling and breaking empty or full railcars boxcars and hoppers
  • Perform OperatorBrake Switch functions
  • Maintain a clean work area free of debris or safety hazards and awareness of surroundings (i.e. vehicles equipment etc.) at all times

SECONDARY

  • Provide support to the PTRA (Port Terminal Railroad Association) opening and closing railcar doors
  • Provide support to the Security front gate by escorting visitors and employees utilizing golf cart patrolling facility scanning incoming and outgoing cargo and employee badges verifying cargo paperwork searching vehicles providing facility directions and directing traffic
  • Train new employees on the BrakeSwitch and Engineer functions
  • Operate forklift to move oil barrels to designated area
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Subject to physical and/or DOT screening is required along with other tests as applicable
  • The employee is continuously required to sit (while driving) grasp and exercise eyehand coordination and eyehandfoot coordination.
  • The employee is continuously required to climb in and out of the equipment.
  • The employee is frequently required to grasp exercise repetitive wrist motion and finger movement
  • The employee is frequently required to ascend and descend ladders and steps two feet wide and should not have a fear of heights
  • The employee frequently is required to talk and/or hear
  • The employee is continuously required to stand and walk
  • The employee is occasionally required bend forward twist and reach overhead
  • The employee must occasionally push/pull lift and/or move up to from 110 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and ability to adjust focus

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Report safety hazards
  • Immediately report incidents involving injury illness or property damage
  • Wear appropriate PPE as instructed by immediate supervisor
  • Comply with all company safety policies procedures and rules
  • Refuse any unsafe task or operation
  • Participate in safety meetings and training
  • Be constantly aware of their personal safety and that of their coworkers
