Job Description

Job Description: Psychology Counselor

Reports to: Principal

Job Summary

The Psychology Counsellor is responsible for providing emotional psychological and social support to students staff and parents as needed. The counsellor will address individual and group concerns promote mental wellbeing and work collaboratively with teachers and administrators to create a supportive school environment.



Key Responsibilities

  1. Counselling Services:

    • Conduct oneonone and group counselling sessions for students to address academic emotional and social challenges.
    • Provide support for students experiencing stress anxiety bullying or other mental health concerns.
  2. Assessment and Guidance:

    • Assess students psychological needs using appropriate tools and techniques.
    • Guide students in developing coping strategies improving communication skills and setting goals.
  3. Collaboration:

    • Work with teachers parents and administrators to identify and address behavioural or emotional issues among students.
    • Collaborate on strategies to promote a positive and inclusive school culture.
  4. Workshops and Awareness Programs:

    • Organize and conduct workshops or awareness sessions on mental health stress management peer relationships and emotional intelligence.
    • Facilitate parentteacher workshops to educate them about students mental wellbeing.
  5. Crisis Intervention:

    • Provide immediate support and intervention during crisis situations affecting students or the school community.
    • Offer referrals to external professionals or organizations when necessary.
  6. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate and confidential records of counselling sessions.
    • Provide periodic reports to the Principal regarding student progress and counselling activities.
  7. Adherence to Policies:

    • Ensure compliance with school policies and ethical standards for counselling.
    • Maintain a professional and empathetic approach in all interactions.


Qualifications and Skills

  • A Master s degree in Psychology Counselling or a related field.
  • Certification in counselling or child psychology (preferred).
  • Minimum 23 years of experience as a school counsellor or in a similar role.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive issues with empathy and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of child development and learning psychology.


Work Environment

  • Office setting within the school premises.
  • Interaction with students teachers parents and administrators.


Team work and collaboration Participating in any relevant meetings/professional development opportunities at the school, which relate to the learners, curriculum or organisation of the school including pastoral arrangements and assemblies Working as a team member and identifying opportunities for working with colleagues and sharing the development of effective practice with them Contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers and support staff including the induction and assessment of new teachers Ensuring that colleagues working with you are appropriately involved in supporting learning and understand the roles they are expected to fulfill Taking part as required in the review, development and management of the activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school Covering for absent colleagues
