Job Role Description: Sterile Processing Technicians are responsible for cleaning decontaminating sterilizing and preparing surgical instruments and medical equipment for use in a variety of healthcare settings such as hospitals outpatient surgical centers and clinics. They manage the inventory of sterilized instruments and maintain a sterile environment by adhering to infection control protocols.

  • Hospital/Acute Care Center: SPTs work in the central sterilization department ensuring instruments are ready for surgeries.
  • Rehabilitation Centers: They ensure the sterilization of equipment used in theutic procedures.
  • Outpatient Clinics: Responsible for maintaining sterilized instruments for minor procedures.
  • Mobile Units: SPTs ensure all portable equipment is sterile and safe for patient care in mobile healthcare settings.

Equipment/Charts Used:

  • Autoclaves: For sterilizing instruments using highpressure steam.
  • Steris Machines: For lowtemperature sterilization processes.
  • Ultrasonic Cleaners: To clean instruments with sound waves and cleaning solutions.
  • Inventory Management Systems: Digital systems for tracking sterilized equipment and ensuring availability.

Certifications Required:

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) by the International ociation of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
