Roles and responsibilities
1. Customer Service:
- Greeting Customers: Greet customers warmly as they approach the checkout counter or register. Ensure that customers feel welcomed and valued throughout their shopping experience.
- Answering Questions: Assist customers with inquiries about products, pricing, promotions, and store policies. If unsure, direct customers to the appropriate person or department for further assistance.
- Promoting Store Promotions: Inform customers about current sales, special offers, or loyalty programs, encouraging them to take advantage of discounts and deals.
- Handling Complaints: Address customer complaints professionally and calmly, offering solutions or escalating issues to management when necessary.
2. Processing Transactions:
- Scanning Products: Use a register or point-of-sale (POS) system to scan items or input item codes, ensuring accuracy in the checkout process.
- Calculating Total: Calculate the total amount of the customer’s purchase, including taxes, and provide an itemized receipt or invoice.
- Processing Payments: Accept various forms of payment, such as cash, credit/debit cards, mobile payments, or gift cards. Handle the payment process accurately and securely.
- Giving Change: When accepting cash, ensure correct change is returned to customers in a polite manner.
- Verifying Discounts and Coupons: Apply promotional codes, discounts, coupons, or loyalty points to transactions, ensuring that any discounts are properly processed.
3. Maintaining Accuracy:
- Ensuring Accurate Transactions: Double-check transactions for accuracy to avoid overcharging or undercharging customers.
- Handling Returns and Exchanges: Process customer returns and exchanges according to store policies. Ensure that returned items are scanned, credited, and placed back in inventory properly.
- Void/Cancel Transactions: In case of mistakes or cancellations, void or cancel transactions in the system, ensuring the process is documented appropriately.
4. Cash Handling and Record Keeping:
- Cash Register Operation: Operate the cash register accurately, maintaining proper cash levels in the drawer and handling large sums of money as needed.
- Counting and Balancing the Till: At the beginning and end of each shift, count the cash in the register to ensure it matches the recorded sales. Report discrepancies to a supervisor or manager.
- Tracking Sales: Keep an accurate log of transactions, sales data, and any cash discrepancies. Submit reports to the accounting or management team as required.
