Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

1. Loading and Unloading Goods:

  • Loading Items onto Vehicles: Safely load products or materials onto trucks, shipping containers, or other vehicles using appropriate tools and equipment. This may involve stacking or arranging items to optimize space while ensuring safety during transit.
  • Unloading Shipments: Unload incoming goods or materials from trucks, containers, or pallets, and transfer them to designated storage areas, ensuring they are handled with care to avoid damage.
  • Handling Fragile or Heavy Goods: Use the proper equipment or techniques to handle fragile, heavy, or oversized items. This might include using straps, blankets, or other protective materials to secure goods during loading and unloading.

2. Inventory Management and Organization:

  • Organizing the Loading/Unloading Area: Ensure that the loading area is clear, organized, and safe. Properly stack items in a way that makes it easy to move goods and minimizes the risk of accidents.
  • Stocking and Storing Products: After unloading, transport products to appropriate storage locations within the warehouse or facility. Maintain organized shelves or storage areas for easy access to goods.
  • Inventory Control: Assist in checking stock levels as goods are unloaded or loaded. Report any discrepancies between inventory records and actual stock, such as damaged goods or missing items.

3. Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

  • Operating Loading Equipment: Use material handling equipment, such as forklifts, pallet jacks, or conveyor belts, to load or unload products. Ensure that equipment is used safely and in compliance with operational guidelines.
  • Equipment Checks: Conduct basic checks on equipment before use to ensure that it is functioning properly. Report any maintenance issues or malfunctions to supervisors or maintenance personnel.
  • Maintaining Tools and Equipment: Ensure that all tools and equipment used for loading and unloading are maintained in good condition and that safety protocols are followed.

4. Safety and Compliance:

  • Following Safety Protocols: Adhere to safety standards and guidelines to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, steel-toed boots, and high-visibility clothing.
  • Securing Loads: Ensure that loads are properly secured before transportation, using straps, ropes, or load bars to prevent shifting or falling during transit.

Desired candidate profile

1. Physical Strength and Stamina:

  • Ability to Lift Heavy Items: A key requirement for a loading worker is the physical ability to lift and carry heavy or bulky goods. Many tasks will involve manual labor, so strength and endurance are important.
  • Physical Fitness: Being able to move efficiently and work on your feet for long periods is essential in this role.

2. Attention to Detail:

  • Accuracy in Loading/Unloading: Ensuring that the correct goods are loaded onto the right vehicles or unloaded from shipments requires focus and attention to detail.
  • Inventory Monitoring: Checking inventory, counting items, and verifying shipments requires accuracy to avoid errors in documentation and stock management.

3. Equipment Handling and Technical Skills:

  • Forklift and Pallet Jack Operation: Ability to safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment. Training or certification in forklift operation may be required.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to perform basic maintenance checks on equipment, ensuring it’s functioning properly before use.

4. Organizational and Time Management Skills:

  • Time Efficiency: Loading and unloading activities need to be carried out efficiently to meet shipment deadlines, so good time management skills are essential.
  • Organization: Ability to organize and store items properly within the warehouse or distribution facility to ensure easy access and minimize clutter.

5. Communication Skills:

  • Clear Communication: Effective communication with supervisors, other workers, and drivers is critical for ensuring that the correct products are handled, loaded, and dispatched.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work well in a team environment, coordinating with others to ensure timely and accurate completion of tasks.
