Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

• Create and modify detailed piping drawings using AutoCAD, focusing on weld mapping and MTO development.
• Collaborate with engineers and project managers to understand project requirements and specifications.
• Develop and maintain accurate piping weld maps that detail all weld joints and associated information.
• Generate Material Take-Offs (MTOs) to quantify materials required for piping systems based on design specifications.
1. Design and Drafting
Create Piping Layouts: Prepare detailed piping system layouts using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, such as AutoCAD or Revit, to represent the arrangement of pipes, valves, fittings, and equipment.
Pipe Routing: Develop efficient routing of pipes based on system requirements, considering factors like space constraints, flow paths, and ease of installation.
3D Modeling: Generate 3D models and 2D drawings to represent complex piping systems, allowing for better visualization and planning.
Detail Drawings: Produce detailed drawings for specific components (e.g., pipe supports, hangers, valves, pumps), including specifications, dimensions, and material requirements.
2. Technical Support
Collaborate with Engineers: Work closely with piping engineers and design engineers to understand project requirements, codes, and specifications.
Interpret Specifications: Read and interpret project specifications, client requirements, and engineering designs to ensure the drawings meet the necessary standards.
Check for Design Compatibility: Ensure that the piping system designs are compatible with other elements of the project (e.g., structural, electrical, HVAC).
3. Standards and Codes Compliance
Adherence to Standards: Ensure that all piping designs comply with industry standards, local regulations, and safety codes, such as ASME, ANSI, and ASTM.
Piping Codes: Apply relevant piping codes (e.g., ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3) to ensure safe and effective system design.
Quality Control: Conduct quality checks on design documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance with specifications.
4. Material and Equipment Specifications
Material Selection: Assist in determining appropriate pipe materials (e.g., steel, PVC, copper) based on the system’s requirements (temperature, pressure, fluid type).
Equipment Integration: Design piping systems that integrate pumps, valves, heat exchangers, and other equipment, ensuring proper connection and functionality.
Bill of Materials (BOM): Prepare detailed material lists, including pipe dimensions, fittings, flanges, valves, and other components.


Desired candidate profile

  • CAD Software Proficiency:
    • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD (required), especially for 2D drafting.
    • Proficient in AutoCAD Plant 3D, Revit, or other 3D modeling tools for piping design.
    • Knowledge of specialized piping software such as PDMS, SP3D, or Bentley Plant is a plus.
  • Piping Design Knowledge:
    • Solid understanding of piping layout, routing, and system design.
    • Knowledge of piping materials (carbon steel, stainless steel, PVC, etc.) and their applications.
    • Familiarity with pipe stress analysis and how it influences the design.
  • Industry Codes and Standards:
    • In-depth knowledge of industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, ANSI, ASTM, API).
    • Ability to ensure designs meet local codes, safety regulations, and quality standards.
  • 3D Modeling and Visualization:
    • Ability to create accurate 3D models for complex piping systems.
    • Knowledge of clash detection and virtual walkthroughs of piping designs using 3D tools.

4. Soft Skills

  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy when preparing piping layouts, ensuring that all dimensions, specifications, and materials are correct.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify potential issues in designs or drawings and provide practical solutions.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively with engineers, project managers, clients, and construction teams.
  • Team Collaboration: Comfortable working in a multidisciplinary team environment, interacting with other departments (e.g., mechanical, electrical, structural).
  • Adaptability: Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
