Roles and responsibilities

Teach fundamentals of Islamic art, architecture, and design principles, focusing on representation, communication, and craft.
Specialization in the History of Islamic Art and Architecture.
Integrate global perspectives with national and regional concerns.
Contribute to Islamic Art and Architecture research and professional practice.
Engage with stakeholders in Qatar and the region on issues in Islamic Art, Architecture, and Sustainable Urbanism.
Support the development of networks and collaborations within HBKU, as well as with program partners and branch campuses in teaching and research activities.
Teaching & Instruction:
Course Preparation and Delivery:
Developing syllabi, creating lecture materials, delivering lectures, leading discussions, and managing courses at undergraduate or graduate levels.

Assessment:
Designing and grading exams, assignments, and projects. Providing feedback to students and mentoring them in their academic development.

Office Hours & Student Support:
Meeting with students during office hours to provide academic support, answer questions, and offer guidance on course material or career paths.

Curriculum Development:
Contributing to the development of new courses, revising existing ones, and integrating innovative teaching methods and technologies.

Research:
Conducting Research:
Engaging in scholarly research that contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the field. This can include experimental, theoretical, applied, or interdisciplinary research, depending on the discipline.

Publishing Papers:
Publishing research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals and presenting research at academic conferences. An active research portfolio is typically expected for career progression.

Securing Research Grants:
Writing proposals to secure funding for research projects. This is often a critical component of an Assistant Professor's role, particularly in the sciences and engineering.

Service & Administration:
Departmental Service:
Serving on academic committees, assisting in program development, and participating in departmental meetings.

University Service:
Participating in university-wide initiatives, serving on institutional committees, and engaging in outreach or student recruitment activities.

Advising Students:
Advising students on academic matters, including selecting courses, planning academic trajectories, and guiding graduate students or research assistants in their research projects.

Desired candidate profile

• PhD or terminal degree from an accredited university in Islamic Art and Architecture.
• 2-5 years of full-time university teaching experience in research, higher education, or closely related fields.
• Evidence of proficiency in teaching, student supervision, curriculum and program development, and professional practice.
• Research and scholarly achievements are competitive with peers at major research universities.
• Evidence of increasing regional and international reputation in scholarly endeavors (funded research grants, publications, etc.).
• Ability to work with diverse groups, cultures, and communities.
• Evidence of participation in academic affairs, professional societies, or other relevant organizations.
• A portfolio of scholarly endeavors, including funded research grants, publications, or patents.
• Experience with cross-disciplinary teaching and service in architecture or related fields.
• Bilingual proficiency in Arabic and English (English is the primary language of instruction).
• Significant national, regional, and international networks and collaborations in teaching and research.
• Peer-reviewed academic publications related to the History of Islamic Art and Architecture.
