Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

  • Lead studies on the fate and transport of emerging contaminants, including PFAS, 1,4-dioxane, pesticides, and other emerging contaminants.
  • Oversee projects monitoring human metabolites and environmental contaminants in wastewater.
  • Lead the application of spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques, including GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS, and HPLC.
  • Develop and validate high-resolution mass spectrometry methods.
  • Identify trace-level identification of PFAS, pharmaceuticals, microplastics, polyaliphatics, polyaromatics, micropollutants, and/or pesticides from various environmental matrices.
  • Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Facilitate regular interactions with research and industry partners to advance collaborative projects.
  • Provide support for the institute's special projects and key research initiatives, contributing to strategic goals.
  • Experience working within an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory is a plus.
  • Analytical Thinking: The ability to approach complex problems systematically, designing experiments, and interpreting data with precision.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision is critical, as even small errors can affect the outcome of the analysis.
  • Knowledge of Instrumentation: Familiarity with a wide range of scientific instruments, including how to operate and troubleshoot them.
  • Strong Mathematical Skills: Required for interpreting data, creating calibration curves, and performing statistical analysis.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of industry regulations, particularly in pharmaceutical or food sectors (e.g., FDA, GMP guidelines).
  • Common Industries Employing Analytical Chemists:

  • Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology: Ensuring the purity and potency of drugs and compounds.
  • Environmental Science: Testing water, soil, or air samples for contaminants.
  • Food and Beverage: Analyzing ingredients and final products to ensure safety and compliance with health standards.
  • Forensics: Identifying substances involved in criminal investigations.
  • Manufacturing: Monitoring quality control and product consistency in chemical production.

Desired candidate profile

  • Candidate must have a PhD in organic, analytical, or environmental chemistry with 6+ years of experience and a strong publication record.
  • Excellent oral and written communication in English; knowledge of Arabic is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, including method development, sample preparation, and publication of research papers and reports.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety, quality processes, and adaptability to a multicultural environment.
  • Candidates must be willing to relocate permanently to Qatar.
  • Attention to Detail:
    Analytical chemistry demands a high level of precision and meticulousness, as even small errors can significantly affect results. An ideal candidate should exhibit strong attention to detail in all aspects of their work.

  • Problem-Solving Skills:
    Analytical chemists need to troubleshoot unexpected results, optimize methods, and resolve technical issues with instruments. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are essential.

  • Communication Skills:
    The ability to clearly communicate complex technical data both in written reports and orally. This includes writing laboratory reports, presenting results to teams or stakeholders, and contributing to scientific papers or publications.

  • Team Collaboration:
    While independent work is often required, many analytical chemists also need to collaborate
