Job Description: CSPD Interim Director
Department: Sterile Processing

Job Overview

The Director of Sterile Processing plays a pivotal role in safeguarding patient safety and care quality by upholding the utmost standards in instrument sterilization and equipment management. This multifaceted position demands a profound understanding of sterile processing techniques adherence to infection control standards and effective team management. This role extends to project management responsibilities requiring the efficient execution of work plans and the assurance of project alignment with the Central Sterile Processing Department (CSPD).

Reporting to the Project Manager the Sterile Processing Director will carry out the responsibilities for the overall workflow of Sterile Processing. He/she directs plans and organizes the staff and activities of the Sterile Processing department. The Director implements best practices related to decontamination preparing and packaging of instruments and overseeing assigned staff. Develops and utilizes key performance indicators for trending areas in need of improvement.

Responsibilities

Project Management:
  • Develops systems to ensure sterile instrumentation is available for surgeries and returned instruments are in optimal condition.
  • Manage the operational aspects of projects and project scope ensuring alignment with CSPD objectives.
  • Apply and enforce project standards within CSPD fostering a culture of project excellence.
  • Prepare for engagement reviews and implement quality assurance procedures.
  • Ensure the completeness currency and appropriate reporting of project deliverables.
  • Identify resource requirements and assign individual responsibilities.
  • Facilitate client meetings effectively fostering collaboration and understanding.
  • Conduct regular status meetings with the CSPD team regarding project progress.
  • Communicate relevant project information to clients delivering engaging and informative presentations.
  • Resolve project issues in a timely manner and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Motivate the project team to work together efficiently and harmoniously.
  • Participates in contract negotiations closing the sale and developing marketing strategies to support future business growth.
  • Looks for cost savings opportunities.
  • Supports government and agency regulation compliance.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Team Leadership and Management:
  • Develops and utilizes key performance indicators for trending and identifying areas of improvement.
  • Supervise guide and lead a team comprising sterile processing technicians coordinators and support staff.
  • Develop and implement staffing plans performance evaluations and training programs.
  • Foster a collaborative highperformance work environment nurturing professional growth.
Sterilization and Instrument Management:
  • Recommends improvement to processes as needed. Ensures compliance and consistency with sterilization principles standards and techniques.
  • Ensure the proper cleaning decontamination sterilization and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment according to industry standards and regulations.
  • Monitor and maintain sterile processing equipment including sterilizers washers and related machinery.
  • Implement and oversee quality control measures to maintain instrument sterilization integrity.
Compliance and Regulations:
  • Stay abreast of relevant regulatory guidelines from organizations such as the CDC FDA and AAMI ensuring departmental compliance.
  • Develop and enforce departmental policies and procedures to align with best practices and regulatory requirements.
Inventory Management:
  • Manage and control sterile supplies inventory ensuring an adequate and costeffective supply chain.
  • Implement efficient inventory management systems minimizing waste.
Education and Training:
  • Develops and maintains education calendar. Develops educational strategies for staff. Selects develops manages and evaluates direct reports and oversees the selection development management and evaluation of indirect reports.
  • Provide ongoing education and training to sterile processing staff ensuring current knowledge of the latest techniques technologies and standards.
  • Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
Quality Assurance:
  • Prepares customer with comprehensive professional quality diagnostic study reports based on diagnostic study assessment.
  • Establish and maintain a robust quality assurance program to monitor and report on the effectiveness of sterile processing procedures.
  • Investigate incidents or breaches in sterilization protocols and institute corrective actions.
Budget Management:
  • Develops and oversees financial management including operating budget supplies equipment space staff and information. Develops and reports on budgets including monthly indicators on quality productivity and efficiency.
  • Develop and manage the departments budget optimizing resources and ensuring costeffectiveness.
  • Monitor expenses related to supplies equipment maintenance and staff.

Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborates with perioperative services nursing directors/managers and surgeons on daily workflow issues and implements solutions where necessary.
  • Collaborate closely with other healthcare departments including surgery infection control and nursing ensuring seamless coordination of sterile processing services.
  • Maintain regular communication with hospital administration regarding departmental performance and requirements.


Requirements

Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in healthcare administration or a related field is required. Relevant experience may be considered in the absence of a degree. A masters degree is preferred.
  • CRCST required. CHL preferred.
  • At least ten (10) years of management and/or supervisory experience in a sterile processing department at an acute care hospital or hospital system. Experience in implementing best practices knowledge of decontamination and sterilization sciences and familiarity with case cart systems and stateoftheart equipment are essential.
  • Operating room or procedural area experience is preferred.
  • Possess and apply an indepth knowledge of standards and regulations set by organizations such as AAMI AORN FDA TJC and OSHA.
  • Proficiency in using word processing and spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Additionally must be proficient with instrument tracking systems such as CensiTrac SPM etc.
  • Possess and apply strong critical thinking analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • Experience working in union and nonunion environments is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in leading teams through change management and process improvements.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders.
