Fashion designers are responsible for creating and developing fashion products that are visually appealing and functional. Their duties include:
Researching trends
Studying fashion trends and consumer preferences to anticipate what will appeal to consumers
Designing
Using computeraided design (CAD) programs or by hand to create designs sketches and mood boards
Selecting materials
Choosing fabrics colors embellishments and trims for each garment or accessory
Collaborating
Working with other designers buyers forecasters and sales teams to develop products that meet customer needs
Creating prototypes
Developing patterns cutting and sewing samples and overseeing the fitting and detailing process
Managing production
Overseeing the production of designs including determining prices and managing marketing
Presenting designs
Presenting designs to creative directors or showcasing them at fashion or trade shows
Marketing
Marketing designs to clothing retailers or to consumers
Fashion designers may also work on custom clothing and accessories for individuals retailers or for theatrical television or film productions.
To become a fashion designer you can complete a college course in fashion design or an apprenticeship with a fashion employer. You can also get a bachelors degree in fashion design or a related discipline such as fine arts or graphic design.
