Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

Process Safety Management (PSM):

  • Risk Identification & Assessment: Conduct hazard analysis and risk assessments (e.g., HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Studies), PHA (Process Hazard Analysis), FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)) to identify potential process hazards and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Process Safety Design: Ensure that safety features are incorporated into the design of processes and systems, including safety relief valves, emergency shutdown systems, fire and gas detection systems, and automatic control systems.
  • Safety Lifecycle Management: Oversee the safety lifecycle of process systems, from design through operation to decommissioning, ensuring safety at each phase.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Compliance with Regulations: Ensure all processes comply with local, national, and international safety regulations, including standards set by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), and ANSI (American National Standards Institute).
  • Incident Reporting & Documentation: Maintain detailed records of safety audits, risk assessments, incident reports, and safety investigations. Ensure that the proper documentation is in place for regulatory inspections or audits.

Safety Systems & Equipment:

  • Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS): Design, implement, and maintain Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), ensuring that systems for detecting and preventing dangerous process conditions are functioning effectively.
  • Process Control Systems: Ensure that appropriate control systems are in place to monitor and regulate the process and prevent safety-related failures.
  • Emergency Systems: Develop and implement emergency systems such as fire suppression systems, gas detection systems, pressure relief systems, and emergency shutdown procedures.

Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis:

  • Incident Investigation: Lead or participate in investigations into process safety incidents or near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Lessons Learned: Document and disseminate lessons learned from incidents to improve safety protocols, training, and hazard prevention measures across the organization.

Training & Awareness:

  • Safety Training: Provide training and guidance to personnel on process safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and the safe operation of plant equipment.
  • Safety Drills & Exercises: Organize and participate in safety drills (e.g., fire drills, evacuation drills, spill response drills) to ensure employees are prepared for emergency situations.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor the performance of safety systems and processes, tracking incidents, near misses, and safety metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of safety measures.
  • Continuous Improvement: Implement continuous improvement initiatives for process safety, working closely with operations, engineering, and safety teams to enhance safety culture and performance.

Design and Risk Mitigation:

  • Sustainable Practices: Ensure the safety design of processes is sustainable, considering the long-term impact of process changes, upgrades, and expansions.
  • Design Modifications: Propose design modifications or upgrades to existing systems to enhance safety or mitigate identified risks. This may include changes to equipment, procedures, or materials used.

Desired candidate profile

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science discipline.

• NEBOSH Diploma on Occupational health and Safety.

Experience & Skills

• A minimum of 10 years' experience in safety field including 5 years within Oil, Gas, petrochemical industry.

• Ability to write reports and SAP competence.

• Computer program knowledge and use.
Technical Skills:
Process Safety Engineering: Deep understanding of process safety principles, risk management, and hazard analysis techniques (HAZOP, FMEA, FTA).
Safety Systems Design: Knowledge of safety instrumented systems (SIS), emergency shutdown systems (ESD), fire and gas detection systems, and other safety-related infrastructure.
Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of industry standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., OSHA 1910.119, EPA Risk Management Plan regulations, NFPA 70E).
Process Control & Automation: Familiarity with process control systems, such as Distributed Control Systems (DCS), PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), and SCADA systems.
Simulation & Modeling: Proficiency with safety analysis tools and software such as PHAST, Aspen Plus, RELAP5, or PIPEPHASE to model process scenarios and identify potential hazards.
Analytical & Problem-Solving:
Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Ability to perform thorough investigations and root cause analyses for incidents, ensuring that corrective actions are effective.
Risk Analysis: Skilled in identifying, evaluating, and mitigating process risks using various analytical methods (e.g., Fault Tree Analysis, Event Tree Analysis).
Attention to Detail: A keen eye for identifying even subtle process safety risks and weaknesses in operational systems or procedures.
Communication & Leadership:
Clear Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey complex safety concepts and technical details to various stakeholders, including management, regulatory agencies, and operators.
Leadership: Ability to lead cross-functional teams in safety-related initiatives, investigations, and continuous improvement projects.
Training & Mentoring: Ability to teach and mentor less experienced engineers and safety personnel on process safety protocols and best practices.
Project Management:
