Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

1. Beverage Preparation

  • Prepare and serve high-quality coffee, espresso, and specialty drinks according to established recipes and standards.
  • Operate espresso machines, grinders, blenders, and other beverage equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure the proper presentation of beverages, including latte art and garnish.

2. Customer Service

  • Provide friendly and attentive service to customers, taking their orders and answering questions about the menu.
  • Handle customer complaints and feedback in a professional manner, striving to resolve issues to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Build rapport with regular customers to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

3. Cash Handling

  • Process customer payments accurately using cash registers or point-of-sale (POS) systems.
  • Maintain accurate cash drawers and reconcile sales at the end of each shift.

4. Menu Knowledge

  • Stay informed about the menu offerings, including various coffee types, brewing methods, and food pairings.
  • Recommend beverages and food items to customers based on their preferences.

5. Cleanliness and Maintenance

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including the coffee station, equipment, and seating areas.
  • Follow health and safety regulations to ensure a safe environment for both customers and staff.
  • Clean and maintain equipment regularly, including espresso machines, grinders, and brewing devices.

6. Inventory Management

  • Monitor inventory levels of coffee beans, syrups, milk, and other supplies, and communicate needs to management.
  • Assist with restocking and organizing supplies as needed.

7. Training and Teamwork

  • Train new baristas and staff on beverage preparation, customer service, and operational procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth operations during busy periods.

8. Promotions and Upselling

  • Inform customers about promotions, seasonal offerings, and new products to enhance sales.
  • Encourage customers to try new beverages or food items, utilizing upselling techniques.

9. Specialty Drinks

  • Experiment with and create new coffee drinks or seasonal beverages to add to the menu.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and popular coffee products.

10. Event Support

  • Assist in the preparation and service of beverages for special events, catering, or large orders.
  • Collaborate with management to plan and execute promotions or events to attract customers.

Desired candidate profile

1. Educational Background

  • High school diploma or equivalent; further education in hospitality or culinary arts is a plus.
  • Barista training or certification can enhance a candidate's profile.

2. Experience

  • Previous experience as a barista or in a customer service role, preferably in a café, coffee shop, or restaurant setting.
  • Familiarity with coffee brewing techniques, equipment, and espresso preparation is highly desirable.

3. Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in operating espresso machines, grinders, and brewing equipment.
  • Knowledge of various coffee types, brewing methods, and specialty drinks.

4. Customer Service Orientation

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a genuine passion for providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to engage with customers, handle inquiries, and build rapport with regular patrons.

5. Communication Skills

  • Effective verbal communication skills to take orders accurately and convey information clearly to customers and team members.
  • Active listening skills to understand customer preferences and feedback.
