Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

Effective coordination between maintenance and contractor management is crucial for identifying and mitigating workplace hazards associated with planned activities. A comprehensive review process should focus on hazards such as noise, temperature extremes, illumination variations, radiation (both ionizing and non-ionizing), ergonomic issues, and the handling of hazardous materials. By anticipating and identifying potential health hazards, professionals can evaluate and monitor these risks, recommending appropriate control measures and personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary. If existing work procedures require updates to minimize exposure to occupational health risks, proactive changes should be proposed and implemented.

Conducting on-site audits and inspections is essential to ensure compliance with industrial hygiene practices. These audits serve to identify health hazards and verify that personnel adhere to minimum safety requirements designed to prevent injuries and illnesses. In situations involving confined spaces, conducting worksite sampling for exposure levels is critical. If hazards are detected, corrective measures must be recommended to protect workers.

Monitoring the use of toxic materials is another key responsibility. This includes overseeing the safe entry and inspection of containers such as drums, tanks, and vessels. Adequate protection measures, including ventilation and other safety protocols, should be recommended based on anticipated exposure levels. Furthermore, ensuring that instruments and sampling devices used by contractors are properly calibrated is vital. Evaluating instrument technology and making informed recommendations for equipment purchases contributes to maintaining safety standards.

Desired candidate profile

A thorough review of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all materials being handled allows for informed recommendations regarding PPE and safety procedures. Ensuring the on-site availability of necessary PPE—such as respirators, ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, and protective suits—further reinforces workplace safety.

In addition to these preventive measures, maintaining an organized schedule for planned radiographic tests is essential. This includes obtaining lists of test locations, dates, and times. Random audits of these tests are necessary to confirm that contractors comply with established radiation protection procedures.

Finally, active participation in the investigation of incidents involving hazardous materials and radioactive sources is critical. Drafting detailed reports and liaising with company and governmental authorities ensures that all safety incidents are addressed thoroughly, contributing to an overall culture of safety and compliance in the workplace. By integrating these practices, organizations can effectively manage health hazards and protect their workforce.
