Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

1. Design and Development

  • Product Design: Create detailed designs for mechanical systems, components, and products using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software.
  • Prototype Development: Develop prototypes and conduct tests to evaluate design performance and functionality.

2. Analysis and Simulation

  • Performance Analysis: Analyze designs using simulation tools to assess their performance under various conditions (e.g., stress, thermal, fluid dynamics).
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve design issues through analysis and testing, modifying designs as necessary.

3. Project Management

  • Project Coordination: Manage mechanical engineering projects from concept to completion, ensuring timelines and budgets are met.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines (electrical, civil, etc.), product management, and manufacturing teams.

4. Research and Development

  • Innovation: Research new materials, technologies, and processes to improve existing products or develop new solutions.
  • Feasibility Studies: Conduct feasibility studies to determine the viability of proposed designs or improvements.

5. Manufacturing and Production

  • Manufacturing Support: Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are feasible for production and meet quality standards.
  • Process Optimization: Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing processes for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

6. Quality Assurance

  • Standards Compliance: Ensure that products meet industry standards and regulatory requirements for safety and performance.
  • Quality Control: Develop and implement quality control measures and testing procedures to ensure product reliability and performance.

7. Documentation

  • Technical Documentation: Prepare and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including specifications, drawings, and reports.
  • Change Management: Manage and document changes to designs and processes, ensuring all stakeholders are informed.

8. Client Interaction

  • Consultation: Meet with clients to understand their requirements and provide technical expertise and recommendations.
  • Presentations: Present design concepts and project updates to clients, management, and other stakeholders.

9. Safety and Environmental Considerations

  • Safety Protocols: Develop and implement safety protocols to minimize risks in the workplace and during product use.
  • Sustainability Practices: Incorporate environmentally friendly practices and materials into designs and processes.

Desired candidate profile

1. Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree: A degree in mechanical engineering or a related field from an accredited institution is essential.
  • Advanced Degrees: A Master’s degree or higher can be advantageous for specialized roles or career advancement.

2. Professional Licensing

  • PE License: A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred, especially for those involved in public projects or responsible for design integrity.
  • Continuous Professional Development: Commitment to ongoing education and training to stay updated with industry trends and technologies.

3. Experience

  • Relevant Work Experience:
    • Typically 2-5 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with hands-on experience in design, analysis, and project management.
  • Internships or Co-ops: Previous internships or cooperative education experiences can enhance practical skills and industry knowledge.

4. Technical Skills

  • CAD Software Proficiency: Strong skills in engineering software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar tools for drafting and design.
