They oversee and overview the specialization goals structure and expectations of the software product. That also includes the planning and monitoring required for producing the ideal software.
Product Managers are strategists and visionaries. They set the direction in which the product is supposed to go. They act as mediators or links between the customer the leadership team the dev team sales and marketing. The role however doesn t end with the product launch. Product Managers must continuously ensure that it performs well on the market. They decide on the product improvements based on the market response and they are the ones who decide whether to discard the product and replace it with a new one. Bear in mind that work is organized differently in different organizations and the responsibilities discussed above are not set in stone.
Role:
Ideation Product managers need to have a welldeveloped creative process that helps them generate develop and curate new ideas. They should determine the ideas that should be worked on promoted or pushed to help the company strategize better. That s why they also must take in feedback and requests regarding the product strategy and product development process.
Strategy Software product managers also must work on the product strategy by bringing the product vision to light. The idea is to bring the business value of the software product based on a welldesigned product roadmap that takes all the companys strategic goals into account.
Releases One of the most important parts of the job is to keep tabs on the timeline for product implementation and its delivery schedules.
Features A software product manager must compare all the possible features of the software and prioritize and rank them regarding the strategic goals. To do so they leverage customer feedback product requirements and stakeholder preferences as input that helps them define the best features for the software.
Responsibilities:
Translating business goals into specific software requirements.
Prioritizing software features based on market need analyses and company strategies.
Managing software project scope by making tradeoffs between competing software requirements such as time vs. cost and software security vs. speed.
Prioritizing feature requests from software development teams.
Crystallizing the product vision and working closely with software engineers/the technical team to define its specifications.
Ensuring that the software solution is successfully meeting business goals and users needs.
Tracking progress against plan and resolving any variances as soon as they are identified.
Making tradeoffs between features schedule and costs based on their relationship to business goals company policies software architecture constraints and software development team capabilities.
Oversee and manage the software development lifecycle.
Work with the market research and management teams to work on the discovery phase.
Collaborate with the product owner to develop a product vision for the new product.
Analyse the complete competitive landscape to see what competitors are doing in the market.
Figure out the strengths and weaknesses of the competitors and use them to make a great product.
Analyse trend reports industry content market statistics sales data user stories mockups and metrics to come up with a working strategy.
Manage the development process and the team members to ensure a quick & efficient product launch.
Develop a complete product requirements document and as well as templates for reference.
Work on the prioritization of new features based on usability functionality and user experience.
Proper pricing model based on what other companies and startups are charging for similar software.
Maintain a complete backlog of all the activities processes and workflows of all the relevant teams stakeholders and any external influencers and consultants.
Requirements:
The following qualifications skills and abilities are what is expected from the software product managers.
Bachelor s degree in software dev computer science product management or a related field.
Proven work experience as a product manager software product manager or similar field.
Certifications from reputable institutions & associations in product management or softwarerelated fields.
Extensive knowledge of various product functions software development process & all things product management.
The software product manager should be able to work with an agile methodology.
Should be familiar with critical product concepts such as the MVP (Minimum Viable Product).
They should be able to manage and participate in the Daily Scrum and Sprint Planning.
A deep understanding of the product vision product launch and other concepts is required.
You need to have excellent communication skills for effective stakeholder communication. That includes working with crossfunctional teams and managing all of them simultaneously.
It s necessary to have great interpersonal problemsolving analytical and research skills.
They need to be able to develop status reports for external and executive stakeholders.

Youll need several hard and soft skills to perform this job effectively:
Strategic direction: PMs are information gatherers defining the strategic direction of their products through the lens of knowledge they acquire about business s strategic goals market s demands and opportunities technological and financial resources available to make the product a reality.
Communicate coordinate and persuade: Conveying a strategy and vision along with specific plans and their rationale is vital. Despite having a consensus on the strategy the implementation doesn t just magically happen. Product managers must fight for attention from development teams lobby for resources. Without manufacturing momentum windows of opportunity can close and competitors can make significant gains. SPMs must keep the train moving forward even though they don t have any engines of their own. On the softer side communication lies at the heart of any successful product manager. They must be a cipher and be comfortable speaking with all sorts of people filling different roles. They speak with customers internal teams and stakeholders. PMs must get along with engineers and relate to the perspectives of stakeholders.
Product development processes: A concrete understanding of the role and product development processes and frameworks is essential. Before finessing the interpersonal dynamics of working with a product development team PMs must be able to speak their language comprehend the expectations and know the scope of their job versus that of project managers UX professionals architects and the like.
Pricing principles: PMs also need a solid understanding of fundamental business and economic policies. Pricing often falls on their shoulders. If they re unable to turn the underlying unit economics into a profitable and scalable business they ll have a short career.
