Fashion designers are responsible for the design development and production of clothing accessories and footwear. Their duties include:
Researching trends
Studying fashion trends and consumer preferences to anticipate what will be popular
Creating designs
Developing concepts and mood boards and using computeraided design (CAD) programs to create sketches and designs
Selecting materials
Choosing fabrics colors and embellishments for each garment or accessory
Working with others
Collaborating with other designers and team members to create prototypes and supervising design assistants and patternmakers
Presenting designs
Showcasing designs at fashion or trade shows and presenting them to creative directors production managers and merchandisers
Managing production
Overseeing the final production of designs and working with product development teams to manage quality and costs
Fashion designers may work in large companies as part of a team or they may work for themselves or a small company as the sole designer. They typically specialize in one area of design such as sportswear footwear accessories or childrenswear.
To become a fashion designer you can complete a college course in fashion design or a related discipline such as fine arts or graphic design. You can also complete an apprenticeship with a fashion employer.
