As a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, the primary responsibility is to ensure the accurate identification of patients and the specific study type required for their diagnosis. This involves meticulous preparation of the necessary radioisotope, taking into account the patient's age and weight to administer the appropriate dose safely.
A critical aspect of the role is the preparation of intravenous (IV) lines for injectable isotopes, ensuring a seamless process for the patient. It is also essential to guide and ensure patient compliance with pre-study instructions, such as dietary restrictions prior to a 131 iodine scan or encouraging adequate hydration before a bone scan. This patient-centered approach is vital in achieving optimal imaging results.
Technologists are responsible for performing nuclear medicine imaging procedures using specialized equipment. This includes conducting routine calibration and surveys of imaging machines to maintain their accuracy and functionality. Maintaining proper logbooks for radioactive materials and technetium (Tc) generators is essential for regulatory compliance and safety, as is the careful management of the radioactive waste room.Additionally, it is the technologist's duty to oversee the activities in the hot lab, reporting any violations to the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and the Chairperson of the Department. Ensuring a continuous supply of materials and isotopes is crucial, which requires timely planning and ordering to avoid disruptions in service.
A key component of this role is demonstrating compassionate communication skills to provide support and care to patients, embodying the philosophy that "the patient is the center of our care." This commitment aligns with the principles of Person Centered Care, and adherence to all organizational policies, plans, and programs is expected.
Furthermore, technologists must uphold the ethical standards and code of conduct as outlined in the institution's policies and guidelines. Continuous professional development is also crucial; completing mandatory education at least one month prior to expiration ensures that knowledge remains current in areas related to quality and safety, accreditation, and document management systems.
