Assists the Laboratory Section Supervisor and/or Laboratory Manager in the operational and/or technical management of assigned section(s) by ensuring proper daytoday operations of the laboratory discipline(s) and serves as a resource person for problemsolving. Responds to changes in workload as necessary and leads adjustments in work assignments in a realtime fashion in the absence of the supervisor. The Lead is accountable for ensuring that appropriate and timely specimen handling delivery specimen testing results reporting and customer service are provided efficiently and costeffectively by laboratory and hospital policies and procedures. The Lead works independently in cooperation with the Laboratory Section Supervisor or Laboratory Manager and/or Outpatient Service Center Manager (if applicable). In the absence of a supervisor may be designated to serve as acting supervisor with all incumbent duties of the supervisor.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists the Laboratory Section Supervisor and/or Laboratory Manager in the operational and/or technical management of assigned section(s) by ensuring proper daytoday operations of the laboratory discipline(s) and serves as a resource person for problemsolving. Responds to changes in workload as necessary and leads adjustments in work assignments in a realtime fashion in the absence of the supervisor. The Lead is accountable for ensuring that appropriate and timely specimen handling delivery specimen testing results reporting and customer service are provided efficiently and costeffectively by laboratory and hospital policies and procedures. The Lead works independently in cooperation with the Laboratory Section Supervisor or Laboratory Manager and/or Outpatient Service Center Manager (if applicable). In the absence of a supervisor may be designated to serve as acting supervisor with all incumbent duties of the supervisor.
- Performs all procedures within prescribed turnaround times. Performs proficiency testing with thorough and timely documentation. Demonstrates ability to appropriately prioritize work at all times. Calls all critical/significant values as soon as available and documents action per protocol. Enforces adherence to same by others. Performs tasks of Medical Laboratory Scientist as needed during periods of peak workload and in the absence of staff members. Independently performs all technical duties of the supervisor during their absence.
- Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by utilizing supplies appropriately to avoid wastage. Takes inventory of section and orders section supplies to ensure an adequate stock is available. Maintains reagent logs. Ensures volumes of all supplies are sufficient for the following shifts. Coordinates instrument service calls. Acts as the contact person for vendors.
- Assigns tasks to staff scheduled in their section daily. Responsible for training and competency of students and section personnel with appropriate documentation. Provides input to supervisor for 30 days 60 days 90 days 6 months and annual checklists/conversations/performance appraisals. Performs direct observations of all assigned staff as part of periodic/annual competency assessments. Participates in the selection of personnel. Leads peer interviewing teams.
- Embrace a culture of safety by ensuring all Infection Control / Safety protocols are followed at all times. Maintains Hazardous Chemical logs and ensures MSD sheets are readily available to staff. Disinfect work areas before the end of each shift. Ensures adequate staff daily for assigned areas and arranges for coverage for all unexpected scheduling vacancies in the absence of the supervisor.
- Review applicable regulatory standards and bring any instances of noncompliance to the attention of the section supervisor. Assigns and rotates proficiency testing samples among all assigned techs. Assures proficiency test results are accurately and completely submitted by the required due date. Investigate unsuccessful results and ensure proficiency reports are reviewed by all required parties per protocol. Review all equipment and maintenance records monthly. Monitors instrument records to effectively identify trends that may indicate a problem with instrument performance. Assists section supervisor in developing/validating / writing and implementing new procedures.
- Performs analyzes and reports statistical analysis of data. Performs linearity studies calibrations and patient correlations per protocol. Performs and provides for daily review of patient results. Performs daily monitoring and monthly submission of QC results and review of charts compiling PI reports and ad hoc studies. Recommends remedial action and adjusts means per protocol. Oversees QC and reagent lot rollovers.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/QUALIFICATION
Experience:
- Three years of relevant experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Medical Laboratory Technician or equivalent position in a highcomplexity laboratory is required
- Five years of relevant experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Medical Laboratory Technician or equivalent position in a highcomplexity laboratory is preferred
Education:
- Bachelors Degree is required
- Equivalent Required Bachelor Degree Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology) 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry) one semester (one quarter) of mathematics. (OR associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology for Incumbents in positions before 2005).
Licenses Certifications and Registration:
- Must be Credential Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist
