Job Description
Fashion designers are responsible for creating clothing shoes and accessories that are ontrend and appeal to consumers. Their duties include:
Researching trends: Studying fashion trends and anticipating what will be popular with consumers
Developing designs: Creating mood boards sketches and designs using computeraided design (CAD) software or by hand
Selecting materials: Choosing fabrics colors embellishments and trims for each garment or accessory
Creating prototypes: Working with other designers to create prototype designs
Presenting designs: Presenting designs to creative directors retailers or customers
Managing production: Overseeing the final production of designs
Working with teams: Working with product development teams to manage quality and costs
Supervising others: Supervising design istants and patternmakers when making up product samples
Fashion designers often specialize in one area of design such as sportswear childrenswear footwear or accessories. They may work for large companies as part of a team or for small companies as the sole designer.
To become a fashion designer you can enroll in a threeyear bachelors degree program in fashion design or a related discipline such as fine arts or graphic design.
