To provide a Lactation Consultant. This position will support the states Special Supplemental Nutrition program for Women Infants and Children (WIC). This position reports to RI WIC Nutrition Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
Provides breastfeeding education and support to WIC participants.
Receives referrals from peer counselors WIC staff and local providers of mothers experiencing complex maternal and infant breastfeeding problems beyond their scope of practice.
Assesses breastfeeding situations and provides counseling to highrisk mothers and infants. Assesses need for distributes counsels and monitors breastfeeding aids (ex: nipple shields SNS breast shields) for complex breastfeeding situations.
Provides timely followup services by telephone home visits WIC clinic visits and/or hospital visits.
Follows the IBCLC Scope of Practice as issued by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.
Communicates with health professionals regarding highrisk cases and refers mothers with medical concerns beyond the IBCLC Scope of Practice.
Respects each client by keeping her information strictly confidential.
Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC clients in RI WIC Crossroads MIS system.
Provides training and education in lactation management.
Provides initial and ongoing breastfeeding training for peer counselors.
Provides breastfeeding training for WIC staff and inservice education for hospital staff and local health care professionals.
May teach breastfeeding classes and support groups for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers or mentor peer counselors leading group meetings.
Mentors and supervises peer counselors.
Mentors new peer counselors through shadowing opportunities and ongoing guidance.
Serves as a liaison between the State WIC Office and birthing hospitals to facilitate peer counseling services at the hospital or to provide rounds with new mothers.
Conducts outreach with community organizations to promote WIC breastfeeding and peer counseling services.
Coordinates breastfeeding promotion activities in WIC and in the community.
Records and collects data required by the State or local agency.
Attends required meetings and trainings.
Maintains IBCLC credential and breastfeeding knowledge and skills through continuing education and IBCLC recertification.
Provides other duties as appropriate.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help all WIC families enjoy a positive experience.
Ability to be available outside the usual 8 to 5 working hours to participants experiencing breastfeeding problems as needed.
Education and Experience:
Holds current certification with the IBCLC credential issued by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and active licensure from the State of RI.
Completes WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum Training Levels 14 to obtain WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert upon hire.
