1 Performs standard and complex ultrasound examinations including examinations of the
abdomen liver renal GYN and small parts scanning.
2 Performs computer work and required forms associated with patient exams
complications and/or quality improvement activities. Responsible for the quality assurance of the
image (positioning/label/technique/network information) prior to transmission to the PACs
(Picture archiving communication system) network.
3 Schedules exams in a manner so as to optimize scanner times while maintaining
flexibility for emergency cases. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well
as the ability to accommodate the emergency patient.
4 Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of nonstandard exams. Schedules
patients for examinations advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results and
notifies the radiologist of scans requiring immediate attention.
5 Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients staff and self. This is
achieved by the use of lead aprons lead gloves proper exposure factor and equipment lead
shields lead lined walls and collimation. Must assure compliance to radiation regulations to
wear film badges and be aware of and practice the safety policies and procedures of the
medical center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed.
6 Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. This includes the
maintenance of patient logbooks registration and editing of patient exams in the computerized
information system copying of images (to CD or film) logging patients on the Hospital
information system Radiology information system (HISRIS) (switching to Cerner soon) work
list.
7 Properly identifies patient images. This is essential so that mistaken identity of patient
images does not occur. The technician must be certain that the patient I.D. band and the
request are identical.
8 Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that patients understand what is
to be done as well as what hazards if any are possible.
9 Performs irregular hour emergency scans on standby/on call 24 hours per day
coverage.
10 Works independently and reports any unusual problems or conflicts to the Imaging
Chief Technologist.
