Job Summary
Under the direction of the directors the Pathologists Assistant serves as a technical expert in Surgical Pathology Gross Rooms. The incumbent provides technical assistance and direction to trainees and pathologists assistants (PAs) in grossing complex cancer specimens as well as simple benign resections and biopsies. Responsibilities include interacting with laboratory directors site managers and other personnel to ensure the proper handling and processing of specimens troubleshooting issues and supporting autopsy services and histology laboratories as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Specimen Handling: Gross complex cancer specimens (e.g. pancreas breast bladder uterus ovary) and simple benign resections and biopsies.
Technical Support: Provide guidance and technical support to trainees and pathologists assistants in the grossing process.
Decision Making: Make technical grossing decisions consult with pathologists as needed and resolve specimen receiving issues.
Laboratory Duties: Perform lab preparation receiving accessioning cryostat frozen sectioning staining gross sectioning dictation and photography.
Collaboration: Interact with laboratory directors site managers supervisors and designees. Provide support to Autopsy Service and Histology Laboratory as needed.
Education: Serve as an educator and role model for trainees and staff members.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelors Degree required; Masters Degree preferred.
Certification: Graduate from a NAACLS accredited pathologists assistant training program. ASCP certification or certificationeligible as a pathologists assistant required. Certificationeligible candidates must pass the certification examination within one year of hire.
Experience: 12 years of experience required; new graduates with the required credentials/certifications will be considered.
Memberships: Current Fellow member of the American Association of Pathologists Assistants (AAPA) preferred. Current Member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology preferred.

Technical Expertise: Indepth knowledge of general PA technical duties including lab preparation grossing and specimen processing.
ProblemSolving: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve specimenrelated issues.
Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with team members and trainees.
DetailOriented: High focus on quality and accuracy in specimen handling and documentation.
Work Schedule
Day shift/variable hours depending on the rotation (usually starting from 8am9am to 5pm or 6pm) with a 1hour lunch break.
Compensation and Benefits
Base Salary: USD $98300 to $210300
