A unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head Gardener at The Johnstown Estate Enfield Co. Meath.
The Johnstown Estate is set on 120 acres of traditional garden and woodland overlooking the river Blackwater.
The estate consists of herbaceous and mixed borders lawns a wedding garden a woodland trail a large water fountain and a tunnel with raised beds.
The Hotel is looking for a passionate gardener with excellent horticultural knowledge who will help run and develop the gardens.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for all aspects of work associated with the management of an estate garden which is open both to guests and the general public.
- To manage the continuing development of the garden working closely with the owners and the garden consultant.
- To liaise regularly with the hotel manager with regard to the overall garden planning and management.
- Continuous maintenance and development of the gardens to the highest standards with particular attention given to highimpact areas such as the entrance herbaceous borders and the Wedding Garden.
- Design cost source and implementation of new projects and planting plans.
- Overseeing planting pruning and maintenance of all trees shrubs hedges and borders. Monitoring and assessing trees and identifying when work is necessary.
- Propagation and all other aspects of plant husbandry for bedding displays. Identification and control of pests and diseases.
- All administration work associated with the role including maintaining all the necessary records involved with chemicals machinery and other tools.
- Identifying and remedying all hazards that pose a risk to the health and safety of staff guests and the public.
- Staff supervision including work experience students.
Requirements
- A recognised horticultural qualification ideally QQI level 6 or higher and at least 2 years experience in a similar role.
- Good communication skills attention to detail and a keen eye for design.
- Excellent plant knowledge and gardening skills. The ideal candidate will be able to call on a broad knowledge of plants in an everevolving setting.
- Propagation and nursery stock knowledge are essential.
- Must have a positive attitude and a good work ethic.
- Be familiar with the safe use and maintenance of garden machinery.
- Be physically fit and have the ability to work under instruction and as part of a team.
- Ability to work alone as well as a team player.
