Responsibilities:

  • Provide an educational program for pupils demonstrating a significant discrepancy between their academic potential and classroom performance.
  • Teach learning handicapped pupils in a special day class basic learning skills and other subject matter aligned with their emotional physical and intellectual needs.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction that parallels the regular classroom curriculum emphasizing remedial reading instruction.
  • Offer individualized and small group counseling on educational and personal problems related to the pupil’s total growth and development.
  • Frequent conferences with parents and professional staff members regarding each pupil’s progress.
  • Assist other professional staff members in diagnosing learning disorders developing planned remediation and evaluating pupil progress.
  • Provide an appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior attitudes social skills and selfimage.
  • Arrange for the integration of pupils into regular classes for instruction in areas where they can succeed.
  • Serve as a member of the School Appraisal Team (S.A.T.) or the District Educational Assessment Team (E.A.S.).
  • Provide continual supervision on an oncall basis for pupils assigned to the group as problems arise elsewhere in the schools.
  • Perform all other functions performed by regular classroom teachers.
  • Develop weekly lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the instructional philosophy and curriculum of the District.
  • Monitor classroom environment to ensure clean and safe conditions notifying the principal of any unclean or unsafe classroom situations.
  • Monitor classroom activities ensuring students are responsible for safely and neatly putting away materials supplies tools etc. at the end of each class session.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or a similar field.
  • Mild/Mod or Mod/Severe or Learning Handicapped Credential from the State of CA.
  • Three or more years of fulltime teaching experience.
  • Two years of successful classroom teaching in the district is normally required before assignment to this position.
  • Extensive experience in working with learning handicapped pupils and/or in remedial teaching techniques reteaching of reading or reading center programs is desirable.
  • Clinical experience with the emotionally disturbed is desirable.
