Clearance Requirements: Tier 1 Background Investigation (Standard Form 85).

Type of Employment: FullTime 40 hours per week.

Contract Terms: One (1) year base contract two and a half (2 ) options years.

Period of Performance: 30 September 2024 31 May 2027.

Summary of Services

The Aerospace Medicine Physician will support the Aerospace Medicine Branch Aerospace Medicine Clinical Sciences Division U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine in providing comprehensive inperson occupational aeromedical evaluations and chart reviews on USAF aircrew with disqualifying medical conditions requiring a waiver to return to operational

duties providing aeromedical risk assessments and recommendations to optimize aircrew health mission performance and flight safety.

Qualifications

  • Be a fully licensed physician with a specialty in at least one of the following:
  • Aerospace medicine with 10 years of experience; or
  • Disciplines of preventive or occupational medicine with flight medicine experience and be board certified in that specialty with at least 10 years of experience.
  • Be able to interpret clinical evaluations for aircrew special duty operators and other airmen required in support of Aerospace and Operational Medicine (FE) consultation teaching and clinical research.
  • Have experience working with and evaluating USAF personnel or other DOD aviation or special duty personnel for a minimum of one year.
  • Activeduty flight surgeon experience must have included: sufficient experience in Air Force medical standards to conduct aerospace and special operational evaluations including initial certification exams for flying/special duty applicants conduct adaptability rating assessment for military special duty applicants and apply MSD and DAFMAN 48123 requirements.
  • Operational experience should also have provided a basis for expertise in training future flight surgeon and aerospace medicine specialist physicians.
  • Former Army and Navy Flight Surgeons with 10 years active duty Flight Surgeon experience and former Air Force Flight Surgeons who have been separated or retired more than 3 years must attend the portion of the USAF Aerospace Medicine Primary (AMP) course required for active duty flight surgeons transferring to the USAF from the other Services before they will be granted Flight Medicine privileges. (Exceptions: Air National Guard ANG or Air Force Reserve Command AFRC Flight Surgeons who are currently credentialed in Flight Medicine by the ANG or AFRC may utilize their current Flight Medicine credentials in the Flight Surgeons office while functioning in a civilian Flight Medicine physician role. The current ANG/AFRC flight medicine credentials must be maintained to allow continued function in the civilian Flight Surgeon physician role.).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive inperson occupational aeromedical evaluations and chart reviews on USAF aircrew with disqualifying medical conditions requiring a waiver to return to operational duties providing aeromedical risk assessments and recommendations to optimize aircrew health mission performance and flight safety.
  • Operate as an independent specialist within the Aerospace Medicine Branch and Aeromedical Consultation Service (ACS). The contractor shall participate in clinical conferences on a regular basis and collaborate with other aeromedical specialists within the division.
  • Serve as an expert consultant or advisor as required in aeromedical matters.
  • Analyze and apply medical standards on all physical examinations utilizing the current Medical Standards Directory (MSD) DAFMAN 48123 USAF Aeromedical Waiver Guide and other supporting resources as necessary.
  • Summarize clinical findings of ACS waiver consultations and clinical case evaluations of USAF aircrew special duty operations and other airmen in written and verbal format.
  • Conduct FECA instruction/lectures via PowerPoint presentations to flight surgeons aerospace physiologists psychologists and international flight surgeons in training at USAFSAM on results of ACS case reviews and research as applied to aeromedical waivers.
  • Write/create competitive wellwritten full drafts as needed of educational teaching curriculum for required courses based on research and presentations and edit PowerPoint teaching curriculum drafts as directed by FECA professional staff.
  • Design plans for scientific and statistical investigations utilizing data from FECA research data determined to be relevant to teaching and consultative mission tasks and applicability to USAF aerospace medicine and present findings at national and international conferences. All scientific and statistical investigation plans will be coordinated with and approved by FECA professional staff and Contracting Officer Representative (COR) for improving branch teaching and consultation capabilities.
  • Collaborate with FECA professional colleagues and other FECA staff and organize review of scientific literature and participate in discussion of same with FECA professional staff and contractors as needed in support of teaching consultative and research tasks.
  • Assist FECA professional staff and senior statistician in authoring scientific paper(s) professional presentation(s) and DoD technical report(s) in support of teaching consultation and research tasks. The number of presentations reports and papers shall be determined by FECA branch chief and principal investigator based upon the relevance of findings as they become available.
  • Assist in the data analyses research design report writing and research collaboration of FECA aeromedical research projects that support teaching and clinical consultations.
  • Assure confidentiality of documents communications and data (i.e. follow HIPAA and IRB requirements) related to teaching clinical consultations and research.
  • Provide and receive technical guidance and advisory recommendations from FECA professional staff regarding teaching and research project management as well as complex case reviews.
  • Work with FECA professional staff to ensure ACS case reviews and evaluations are executing on schedule.
