About the Role
The Director of Risk Management oversees patient safety and risk management activities including claim management risk assessments root cause analysis and managing the Patient Safety Council. This role ensures the effective operation of these functions and integrates the corporate TERM program into the overall risk management strategy.
Responsibilities
- Adheres to hospital safety policies and applies infection control procedures when handling blood and body fluids.
- Ensures departmental compliance with regulatory agencies and monitors contract adherence for designated units.
- Maintains compliance with federal and state regulations while staying informed about relevant developments and laws.
- Communicates departmental issues with supervisory personnel and analyzes incident reports using the MIDAS database.
- Completes SarbanesOxley obligations by accurately submitting incident reports and developing corrective action plans after safety surveys.
- Investigates serious incidents according to Hospital Corporate Guidelines and assesses risk in highrisk areas with facility leadership.
- Collaborates with Infection Control Preventionist on employee/patient exposure risks and serves as the Risk Management content expert for staff orientation.
- Participates in regulatory surveys and understands the incident reporting process relationships with Corporate and the Corporate TERM Program.
- Responds to corporate risk reduction initiatives including HRU projects and recall situations.
- Completes and submits Adverse Event Reports (AER) to corporate within fifteen business days.
- Manages medical malpractice and general liability claims and addresses Hospital Risk Alerts and Joint Commission Sentinel Alerts through action plans.
- Develops and implements policies for claims processing evidence preservation and document handling.
- Communicates with Corporate Risk the hospital CEO and regional leadership on legal matters including trials and mediations.
- Reviews routes and monitors nonphysician contracts for facility compliance.
- Develops corrective actions for claimsrelated issues and chairs the Patient Safety Committee ensuring followup reporting to corporate.
- Serves as a resource for staff by articulating the hospital Risk Management Program and identifying performance trends to develop corrective action plans.
- Annually reviews and updates the Risk Management/Patient Safety Plan including setting goals and objectives.
Skills & Abilities
- Computer proficiency to include at a minimum Microsoft Word EXCEL and Outlook and hospital software programs as applicable.
- Ensures compliance with Joint Commission standards and hospital policies.
- Exhibits strong leadership organization communication and interpersonal skills.
- Effectively relates to clinical staff medical personnel and the public.
- Proficient in PC applications with deep knowledge of managed subfunctions and overall departmental operations.
- Applies quality tools like RCA FMEA and understands regulatory standards for hospital accreditation.
- Knowledgeable in Joint Commission Standards CMS/DHS regulations and statistical analysis.
- Familiar with Six Sigma ("Lean") principles.
