Job Description

To undertake without supervision all major and general repairs to all types of motor vehicles and items of plant and horticultural equipment to include specialist repairs inspections and diagnostics within the workshop and on site.

Responsible to carry out all repair work and scheduled maintenance of vehicles plant & horticultural equipment including engine chassis gearbox electrical repair and preventative maintenance inline with manufacturers specifications best practise DVSA roadworthiness standards and service level agreements.
Responsible for maintaining appropriate knowledge in order to carry out vehicle inspections and MOT preparation in line with the requirements set out by the DVSA including the HGV inspection manual and Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 2022.
Responsible for carrying out work on and around vehicle high voltage systems safely and in accordance with industry standard working procedures.
Carry out bodywork painting welding and fabrication within the capabilities of the workshop.
Carry out diagnosis of faults on all systems (hydraulic pneumatic fuel electrical etc) following recognised diagnostic procedures logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problemsolving techniques to establish faults.
Use of a range of diagnostic equipment such as multimeters EOBD readers and other specialised diagnostic equipment and interpret the information to determine faults and serviceability.
Responsible to ensure for all work carried out with due regard to the safety and welfare of others whilst maintaining work areas in a clean tidy and hygienic condition with limited supervision.
Responsible to undertake all assigned tasks relating to vehicle/equipment repairs and maintenance within industry standard working times to meet KPI s. Where industry standard times are unavailable the post holder should complete tasks in a reasonable time that is agreed with their supervisor/manager.
Preparation of new fleet items for operational and road use including the application of livery predelivery inspection and any required modifications in line with the service users specification.
Mandatory requirement to participate in Fleet Services out of hours standby including call out and on site working to meet any stakeholders/contractual requirements on a rota basis and/or to suit business needs.
Responsible under the instruction of a relevant supervisor/manager to attend roadside breakdowns in all weather conditions at locations in or outside of the borough of Sandwell.
Responsible for ensuring the health safety and wellbeing of all vehicle/equipment users and passengers whilst in attendance of a roadside breakdown.
Responsible for providing advice guidance and training to service users drivers and customers with regards to vehicle operation roadworthiness defects and repairs carried out.
Directly responsible for the load safety of any vehicles or assets recovered from roadside or satellite depots.
Responsible for lone working at various stakeholder s premises/depots carrying out and completing various tasks with conflicting deadlines using own initiative with no direct supervision.
To carry out various driving duties including general vehicle recovery vehicle and spares delivery/collection including vehicle MOT presentation in accordance with service.
Removal of spares and equipment from obsolete fleet items.
Responsible to use work equipment safely and in line with working procedures. Undertaking preuse inspections of work equipment and any minor repairs within competency ensuring the equipment is safe to use reporting defects to line manager.
Responsible for the mentoring development and internal training of apprentices and/or young persons in carrying out day to day tasks of the post holder ensuring they are trained to the competency required in order to gain the relevant qualification completing any paperwork or observations and conducting quality control checks on tasks carried out.
To ensure the economic use of all items of plant equipment spare parts etc.
Responsible to use applicable fleet database system via computer tablet or relevant equipment to ensure the accurate recording of work tasks.
Required to assist a variety of stakeholders including DVSA Taxi Licencing and West Midlands Police.
Required to obtain fork lift truck licence F gas licence Tail lift LOLER certification Award in Electric/Hybrid vehicle system repair & replacement and any other training certification or qualification deemed necessary for the service area.
Responsible to maintain up to date knowledge across all specialist areas of vehicle plant and equipment repair
maintenance and inspection including changes to any the applicable regulations/legislation.
To work alternating shifts to suit the business requirements.
To participate in the operation of the Council s Appraisal Scheme.
Championing and executing an open culture of Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) throughout the council which reflects the council s policy values and behaviours.
Such other duties as may be appropriate to achieve the objectives of the post to assist the Service Area in the fulfilment of its objectives commensurate with the post holders salary grade abilities and aptitudes.
The post holder must at all times carry out his/her responsibilities with due regard to the Councils policy organisation and arrangements for Health and Safety at Work

Requirements

Key Requirements

Full UK HGV (Category C or CE).
Hold a BTEC National Certificate in Automotive Engineering (ONC) or equivalent.
Take part in an outofhours breakdown service.
Level 3 NVQ Automotive Maintenance and Repair or equivalent experience working in a heavy commercial vehicle workshop.
LGV License: Unrestricted Category C.
F gas license.
Forklift operator s license.
Tail lift LOLER certification.
Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement.
