Role Overview:

We are seeking an entrylevel Technical Advisor with an advanced degree in chemistry or relevant laboratory experience to join the Intellectual Property Prosecution team in San Francisco. Under the supervision and guidance of partners the Technical Advisor will perform a variety of patentrelated activities primarily focusing on patent prosecution freedom to operate analysis and due diligence work. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals with a strong background in chemistry looking to embark on a career in intellectual property.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess scientific literature patents and patent application documents in various chemical subjects including organic synthetic and medicinal chemistry.
  • Understand critique and provide insightful opinions on scientific data related to inventions.
  • Conduct comprehensive searches for scientific articles patents and patent application documents relevant to the subject of an invention.
  • Perform indepth analyses comparing an invention with existing discoveries or inventions identifying essential elements features or components.
  • Compose patent applications with a comprehensive background of the field descriptions of critical features and components and a set of claims clearly defining the invention.
  • Draft responses to rejections of patent applications from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and other worldwide Patent Offices providing detailed analysis of the scientific or patent references cited in the rejections assessing differences and presenting convincing arguments for why the patent application should be allowed.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues on various projects presenting ideas reasoning and conclusions concisely and providing insightful feedback and arguments.
  • Work with clients on innovative and cuttingedge technologies to procure patent protection and build IP portfolios.
  • Collaborate with team members working from the office approximately 60% of the time in accordance with the firms published guidelines.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Chemistry (candidates who have defended their dissertation and are awaiting degree conferral will also be considered) or relevant laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in organic chemistry synthetic chemistry medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Strong verbal presentation skills for conveying scientific concepts terms and discoveries to diverse audiences including scientists and nonscientists.
  • Excellent scientific writing ability including proper grammar and vocabulary analyzing and explaining abstract scientific concepts synthesizing large amounts of scientific literature into concise descriptions and differentiating and describing important differences among related scientific discoveries.
  • Ability to prioritize competing responsibilities stay organized and exercise attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in team settings.
  • Serviceoriented mindset.

The team advises clients on obtaining and enforcing patent protection licensing or acquiring patent rights executing financing and other business transactions and navigating the patent landscape in various industries.
