ABOUT SDSN

The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has been operating since 2012 under the auspices of the UN SecretaryGeneral. SDSN mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development including the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. We aim to accelerate joint learning and promote integrated approaches that address the interconnected economic social and environmental challenges confronting the world.

SDSN works closely with United Nations agencies multilateral financing institutions the private sector and civil society. It is directed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs and operates through offices in New York Paris and Kuala Lumpur.


ABOUT THE SCIENCE PANEL FOR THE AMAZON

The Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA) convened under theauspices of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) representsthe worlds first highlevel science initiative dedicated to the survival ofthe Amazon. It has the mission of synthesizing and communicating scientificknowledge about the Amazon integrated with Indigenous and local knowledge toaccelerate solutions for sustainable and equitable development.

The SPA which launched the landmark 2021Amazon Assessment Report at UNFCCC COP26 in Glasgow is a key point ofreference on the Amazon. SPAs first report is the most indepth and holisticreport of its kind on the Amazon. The SPA has also launched three policy briefsin UNFCCC COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh namely A call for global action to movethe Amazon rainforest system away from tipping points; Transforming theAmazon through Arcs of Restoration; and The role of Amazonian IndigenousPeoples in fighting the climate crisis.

The state of urgency and the complexity and scope of thechallenges the Amazon is facing calls for continued specialized research andscientific knowledge. The coming years are crucial for implementing economicsocial and environmental transformations to save the Amazon and do so atscale. Building on its main achievements to date the SPA will continue toproduce knowledge synthesis products that distil the latest scientific findings.


RESEARCH CONSULTANT POSITION

The SPA is currently producing a policy brief focused onRestoration in Practice in the Amazon. The policy brief will be launched atthe CBD COP16 in October 2024 with the goal of supporting policymakers toadvance a sustainable development in the Amazon. The SPA is hiring a researchconsultant to support the development of the brief. The consultant will reportto the Lead Authors of the policy brief and work closely with members of the SPAScientificTechnical Secretariat to elaborate the document. This positionoffers a unique opportunity to contribute to a highimpact policy documentunder the guidance of the lead authors Dr. Catarina Jakovac (UFSC) and Dr.Nathalia Nascimento (ESALQ/USP) and a group of Latin American coauthors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsibilities will vary according to the specific needs ofthe Lead Authors but might include:
  • Conducting literature review(s)
  • Identifying sources of data
  • Systematizing data
  • Developing data visualizations (graphs tables maps etc.)
  • Performing spatial analyses such as combining maps fromdifferent sources and extracting descriptive statistics
  • Support the writing of the manuscript
  • Support the review of the manuscript ensuring scientificaccuracy as well as copyediting
  • Support in the review of translations of the manuscript
  • Schedule meeting(s) of the author(s); take notes atmeeting(s) and circulate follow up action items
  • Participate in working group meetings
  • Other items as relevant and assigned by Lead Authors

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in climatology biology ecology conservation anthropologyor related discipline.
  • Proven track record of experience in forest research in theAmazon Basin and/or on forest restoration
  • Strong background in GIS
  • Strong communications skills (written and oral)
  • Ability to adapt technical knowledge and complex concepts toproducts aimed at policymakers.
  • Ability to operate with independence under pressure and tomeet deadlines and commitments.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and produce highqualitywork.
  • Ability to demonstrate integrity in deliverables behaviorand demeanor.
  • Deep commitment to diversity inclusiveness andempowerment.
  • Sensitivity in working across cultures languages and timezones.
  • Fluency in English and either Portuguese or Spanish.
