Animal Shelter Attendant

JOB SUMMARY

The Animal Shelter Attendant performs routine cleaning and responsible animal care work in support of the operations of the County Animal Shelter.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Ensures animal confinement areas are cleaned and maintained in a sanitary manner.

• Feeds and waters confined animals; makes routine inspections of animals and their cages to monitor health safety cleanliness of cage etc.

• Helps socialize animals to give the animals a better chance of adoption.

• Answers telephone if needed and greets visitors; receives inquiries and provides information or refers inquiries to appropriate personnel.

• Assists interested parties in claiming or adopting confined animals.

• Assists Vance County citizens in surrendering animals to the shelter.

• Assists in vaccinating animals coming into shelter and caring for sick and injured animals.

• Takes pictures of animals coming into the shelter; assisting in networking and uploading animal pictures and information onto shelter approved websites.

• Assists office assistant as needed.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Requires a high school diploma and six (6) months of related experience with domestic and/or wild animals or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

• Possession of a valid drivers license.

• Must be able to obtain rabies vaccination certification status.

Special Requirements:

Requires weekend and afterhours work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy work which exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects including the human body and/or animals. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a relatively safe and secure work environment. The employee is subject to hazards in public safety work including working in inside and outside environments extreme temperatures and the risks involved in handling rabid or vicious animals as well as and exposure to various hazards such as various atmospheric conditions noise vibration and physical conditions. Employees are also exposed to bloodborne pathogens are subject to the OSHA rules and regulations are considered in a safetysensitive position and may be required to work in close quarters.
