The world of fashion design is diverse. Designers have many duties that go beyond just drawing clothing designs. They are also responsible for researching trends and marketing their products. There are additional duties for a designer depending on what area of design they go into, such as mass market production or customized design. As part of the process of designing different types of Abayas, an Abaya designer must create a design suitable for the bodies of those who will wear the Abaya as well as create patterns and choose appropriate fabrics and embellishments. The designer is creating Abayas for mass-market distribution, must ensure that the abaya can be produced and sold in a cost effective manner. Some very conservative women may wear simple black Abayas, although other styles and designs are available. For Abaya designers, a consideration of modesty and functionality is important as creating innovative and attractive garments.
❖ Fashion Designer Responsibilities.
- An abaya designer must take these restrictions into consideration when creating the garment, as it is important that the garment function well in both assisting a woman in meeting modesty codes while also allowing her enough freedom of movement to accomplish daily tasks.
- Another consideration of an abaya designer includes the fabrics. While the fabric should not be sheer and should be thick enough to conceal a woman's shape, it should also provide ventilation so that women are not overcome with heat while wearing the garment.
- The primary concerns of a designer often depend on the types of Abayas that he or she specializes in and according to the demands of the company.
- Most Abayas are designed for everyday wear in areas where modesty codes may not be strictly enforced and where women are permitted some degree of freedom in their clothing choices.
- Designers should be forward-thinking to incorporate different ethnic clothing styles into the garments and use interesting fabrics and embellishments to create fashionable Abayas.
- Fashion designers research current and future trends. Conceptualization of design through market research and surveys for developing idea in creating trending styles.
- Preparing original sketches of abaya and patterns on provided materials for making samples.
- Supervising the cutting and providing complete measurement to the master cutter.
- Developing a pattern that is cut and sewn into sample garments and supervising the making up of these, including handwork, crystal work, embroidery, fitting, detailing and adaptations.
- Collaborating the work with other fashion designers, prospective buyers, and current market for predicting the trends in near future, assembling designer team for carrying out the designing process, discussing designing ideas with company management, sales and marketing representatives, and working on it accordingly.
- Attending fashion shows for obtaining more knowledge on the latest trends and techniques in fashion designing, reviewing fashion magazines for obtaining more intricate knowledge on the same, etc.
- Understanding the various aspects of designing techniques like layering, producing patterns using decorations and embellishments, etc., and selecting appropriate production techniques accordingly.
- Purchasing of materials includes searching of new materials, latest fashion in clothing (besides basic clothing and prices), accessories such as laces, crystals, stones and other decorations items.
- Communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers and the public and other external sources for providing and attaining better information and knowledge about the product.
- Preparing the designs and make presentations on the models for approval of the Director board and to know the production quantity for each branch.
