Project background
The team is building an internal platform (EDP) for software product developers to accelerate the development and delivery of software products to tackle the massive challenges facing the energy sector. The platform is a service oriented cloudnative platform that is being built to provide application teams with selfservice capabilities to develop run and operate their software products. The platform provides services for application infrastructure data service lifecycle management application build and delivery as well as services to operate their software products. The platform is deployed in a hybrid cloud encompassing both private cloud and select public clouds.

We are looking for talented experienced and motivated individuals to join this project.

Position description
The infrastructure product line offers data centre services that are provided through a software layer to other product lines within the programme. The virtualisation engineer is a member of the group of compute and storage engineers within the infrastructure subproduct line (covering network compute storage and backup). The engineers of the infrastructure subproduct line build the compute and storage environment as designed by the lead architect and core infra architect. Within the product line engineering will be continuously automated. The goal is to establish a fully automated environment where all steps after physical installation will be automated.

As the entire project is following an agile framework they have the technical knowledge to translate the requirements given into the necessary implementation steps and document them in user stories in the agile framework. Within this step the dependencies will be defined and the effort to build the designed functionality will be estimated. After this preparation step the implementation will be done tested as defined and documented according to the project standards. Following the defined processes the engineer will hand over the infrastructure to operations.

Using their knowledge the virtualisation engineer will actively analyse the received requirements and validate the information. If there is missing information or design decisions that do not result in a single solution option he will actively address these and facilitate a quick solution to the open questions. While the project is in a startup mode the virtualisation engineer feels comfortable taking on tasks outside the defined core competencies and is openly creating the necessary communication channels within the various organisations working on this program.

Key activities
  • Successful virtualisation engineering: The engineer has the knowledge to transfer the specific designs into the target environment. He tests and documents the environment accordingly. The future core virtualisation technology will be KVM. VMWare knowledge will be appreciated to support the existing technology stack.
  • Continuous Improvement and Adaptation: The virtualisation engineer actively validates the status of the environment in his responsibility and ensures to keep the configuration up to date. He actively informs his team lead architect and the architects about required patches and configuration adjustments. He further reports observations in case configuration does not support the required security standards.
  • Effective Collaboration and Communication: The engineer has the capability to explain technical requirements properly. He has an open mindset to collaborate within technical alignments.
  • SelfOrganisation: The virtualisation engineer has the capability to organise the work handed over according to prioritisation and complexity. He tracks the status and reports actively risks issues and expected delays. In case further information is required he will actively investigate to find the relevant contact and start resolving the issue in line with the project guidelines.
  • Integration into processes: The virtualisation engineer follows the designed processes to achieve successful work and collaboration as well as detailed documentation.
