The Project Estimator using blueprints job specifications and their own experience provides labor material and equipment cost estimates for excavating utility and related projects. They are accountable for all preconstruction activities including securing contracts writing purchase orders reviewing submittals and developing project budgets. The Estimator then communicates the budgetary guidelines for awarded projects to hand the job off to the Excavating Department Project and Operations Managers prior to the start of construction.
The Project Estimator reports to the Excavating Department Manager.
Estimating and Project Management
1. Perform detailed utility takeoffs to determine material quantities.
2. Perform earthwork takeoffs to determine soil quantities including cut/fills and import/export using Trimble Business Center.
3. Solicit pricing for required materials from qualified vendors.
4. Solicit pricing for work outside of scope of ability from qualified subcontractors.
5. Prepare cost estimates and bid proposals.
6. Prepare budgets for secured projects.
7. Prepare subcontracts and purchase orders for secured projects.
8. Assist with the daily responsibilities of the Project Manager as needed in the event of the Project Manager s vacation / time off / illness.
9. Other duties assigned.
Requirements
The ideal Project Estimator candidate would possess and demonstrate the following skill sets and qualifications:
1. Over 10 years of knowledge and experience estimating projects in the excavating industry
2. Thorough knowledge of Trimble Business Center earthwork estimating and GPS site management software.
3. Thorough knowledge of HCSS Heavy Bid bidding and Heavy Job project management software.
4. Strong analytic and math skills detail oriented.
5. Strong written and verbal communication skills
6. Strong time management and organizational skills.
7. Proficient in reading and accurately interpreting blueprints specifications and geotechnical reports
8. Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and other industry related programs
9. An Associate s or Bachelor s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management (Preferred)
