Job Description

ME Medical Recruitment We are currently recruiting for a Paediatric PHO/Registrar for a hospital in Queensland.

This is a 79bed hospital and offers a range of general and specialist inpatient and outpatient services including emergency general medicine and surgery basic orthopaedic clinical investigation obstetrics maternity gynaecology high dependency and coronary care palliative care neonatal nursery medical imaging pathology and paediatrics.

About you:

To be successful in this role you must have a MBBS or equivalent to enable registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) at Level 3 supervision.

  • Please note if qualifications were obtained outside Australia the candidate must be eligible for registration with AHPRA with the appropriate supervision level and provide the following:
  • Evidence of successful completion of IELTS or equivalent English Language test results within the last year.
  • Evidence of successful completion AMC MCQ (part 1) examination.
  • Evidence of recency of clinical practice supported by current references.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience and skills in the provision of clinical services in an Emergency Department at Registrar or Principal House Officer level.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with staff and
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a multidisciplinary approach to service

The Health Service provides public health services across this region of Queensland in hospitals and in the community. The Area Health District is a statutory body governed by our Board. We serve a growing population of approximately 250000 people and employ more than 3700 staff treating more than 700000 patients each year. The health service has a diverse geographic footprint ranging from regional cities to remote townships in the west and beachside communities along the coast.

The Hospital

The Hospital is a 94bed hospital and offers a range of general and specialist inpatient and outpatient services including emergency general medicine and surgery basic orthopaedic clinical investigation obstetrics maternity gynaecology high dependency and coronary care palliative care medical imaging pathology and paediatrics. Additional services include Mental Health Alcohol and other Drugs Service oral health physiotherapy dietetics speech pathology and outreach/communitybased facilities as well as a Primary Health Care Centre located close by. A private Mater Hospital is adjacent to the Hospital and operates within a colocation agreement.


The Hospital has approximately 282 full time equivalent staff delivering services across acute community and primary care. Approximately 500 babies are born at the Hospital each year and approximately 1600 surgical cases performed in the two operating theatres. There is a 29bed mixed General Surgical and Medical Ward and a four bed High Dependency Unit where patients may be held pending retrieval or for close observation not possible on the wards. Additional beds are available for paediatrics. The hospital has a busy surgical outpatient clinic reviewing a wide variety of surgical conditions.


Paediatrics Department

Paediatrics Department has a 9 bed General Paediatric Ward and a 4 cot Nursery. It is the hub centre for accepting referrals in consultation with the Paediatrician and Qnets of children and neonates who can be managed within the resources available.

In addition to a Paediatric outpatient service that reviews a wide variety of paediatric conditions the department provides specialist paediatric services including Community Paediatrics Child Protection Diabetes Indigenous Health and Child Development.

Consultants are supported clinically in both the ward and clinics by Registrar and RMO cover. Administrative support for the ward and the Department is also provided.


The hospital has a busy Paediatric outpatient s department reviewing a wide variety of paediatric conditions and includes a diabetic clinic. 30% of all CAT 1 patients presenting to the ED are Paediatric.

The Nursery has C.P.A.P. and ventilator capabilities undertaking short term respiratory support for newborns or stabilisation before transfer to a Tertiary facility for ongoing management. Infants born less than 34 weeks gestation are transferred inutero if possible in consultation with the Obstetric team.


The Opportunity

Support the Senior Medical Staff in ensuring the Paediatric services provided by the Hospital are of the highest standard and delivered in an efficient and effective manner given available resources.

Provide an efficient and highquality Paediatric service to the Hospital. The provision of clinical services for the Hospital and Health Service is provided as one service at multiple sites. In order to meet service needs the Registrar / Principal House Officer may be required to provide clinical services at any facility within the Hospital and Health Service in line with the clinical services capability of the that facility.
