Job description
We are currently seeking a Solar Power Designer-Drafter (Electrical Engineer) with diverse expertise in the field of solar energy.
This position will create all technical design drawings required for the full construction of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in accordance with all relevant codes, specifications, and standards. You will report to the Engineering/Design Manager.
Responsibilities
- Design Solar PV systems, including single-line diagrams, array layouts and 3-D models, in accordance with all relevant federal, state and local codes sufficient for permitting and installation using AutoCAD and custom design tools under the guidance from the engineering department.
- Assess / survey site conditions (i.e., roof, electrical room, etc.) and anticipate electrical issues that may arise during the installation process.
- Maintain constant communication with installer partners and project managers to update design drawing set as needed due to field changes/design modifications.
- Involvement in construction project management, permitting / regulatory approval process, research and development in solar technology for new product development and staying current on new technological developments in the field.
- Specify all AC and DC electrical equipment for both low and medium voltage interconnections with utility, including AC combiners, transformers, switchgear etc in accordance with the National Electric Code, and all other applicable federal, state and local codes.
- Attend meetings with third party reviewers, clients, and the Authorities-Having-Jurisdiction (AHJ s)
- Design data acquisition system and performance monitoring for a PV system.
- Provide engineering support during permitting and construction of a project and provide field engineering and assistance to construction management, as necessary.
- Provide engineering support to business development team on initial site-walks and for creation of proposals and bid documents.
- Review technical portions of bid documents and provide pricing to the business development team during bid process.
- Conduct equipment evaluation and assist with development of bill-of-materials with the procurement team.
Qualifications
- BS/MS in Electrical Power Engineering (would consider Mech/Civil)
- 2+ years of experience in the electrical power industry
- 1+ years of experience in solar PV system design, preferably commercial scale.
- Must be proficient in AutoCAD and related AutoDesk software.
- Demonstrated electrical, structural and mechanical design skills, and the ability to generate accurate, highly detailed construction drawings.
- Strong multi-tasker with strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills, including the ability to communicate in a positive manner with project managers, other engineering/design team members, management and installation contractors to foster an environment of superior coordination.
- Good problem-solving ability and a proactive work ethic. Must take accountability of own body of work, closing each project by design completion efficiently, while maintaining accuracy and strict attention to detail.
- Willingness and ability to clearly define objectives, exercise sound technical judgment, take on increasing levels of responsibility and to thrive in a small, flexible and dynamic work environment.
- Knowledge of National Electric Code and International Building Code (IBC).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Stay up to date with latest research and development in solar technology, specifically for all new relevant product development.
- Strong understanding of basic Electrical Engineering principles such as power flow, fault analysis, transformers, operation of electrical equipment such as relays, fuses, and circuit breakers.
- Be comfortable in a fast-paced, ever changing work environment with multiple deliverables.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of work experience with low voltage & medium-voltage electrical equipment and electrical power system design
- Experience using ETAP/ SKM software for power system modelling to conduct short circuit current calculations, arc fault analysis, coordination studies, etc.
- Experience in power system relay protection
- Experience with 3D CAD modelling is a plus.
