Organization Overview

Housed in the National Historic Landmark - the Charles Gates Dawes House, the Evanston History Center collects, preserves, shares, and enriches the understanding of Evanston’s history through tours, exhibits, public programs, educational outreach, community events, and research facilities. Now more than ever, the Evanston History Center (EHC) provides a unique lens into how Evanston’s past shapes and impacts the present and future.

Opportunity Summary

The Director of Development/Membership is tasked with spearheading the creation and implementation of a comprehensive plan that can successfully meet the Evanston History Center’s annual target for contributed revenue from various sources. These sources include individual and corporate donations, foundation and grant giving, special events and membership campaigns. With a focus on raising funds annually to support operations, including a robust schedule of free public programming, this role serves a vital purpose for the EHC.

This position has the opportunity to incorporate a hybrid schedule to accommodate donor visits and off-site activities. The salary for this role is $65-75,000 and is a full-time position.

Key Responsibilities:

Planning and Management
  • Create an ambitious, broad-based development plan and calendar with clearly defined goals, objectives, strategies, and timelines.
  • Manage and monitor an annual development program budget and track progress through monthly and annual reporting. Provide recommendations to adjust program quarterly to meet goals.
  • Oversee and evaluate all processes and procedures related to prospect identification, donor engagement stewardship activities, and contributions management.
  • Manage fulfillment of Membership renewals and new memberships. Plan and execute retention, lapsed and acquisition efforts related to growing Membership.
Individual and Corporate Giving
  • Identify, cultivate, and successfully solicit major gifts - $5000 to $50,000, from a diverse group of individuals, corporations, and foundations. Ensure high-quality and appropriate stewardship of donors at all gift levels.
  • Conceive, propose, and lead on-site cultivation events aimed at engaging both prospective and existing donors.
  • Enhance initiatives aimed at expanding the EHC’s donor base.
  • Plan and execute year end appeal campaign, including assessing previous campaigns for ways to increase effectiveness of future campaigns. Manage process in Donor Perfect and with printers for implementation of campaign.
  • Manage EHC’s major annual fund raiser, the Mother’s Day House Walk as well as a series of smaller fundraisers throughout the year.
  • Establish and sustain an ongoing system for recording all donor communications and ensuring timely follow-up actions, including appropriate donor recognition.
Grant Writing and Administration
  • Create a process for current and upcoming grants to maintain a pipeline calendar with due dates, dollar values and next steps.
  • Apply and submit all grant pre-qualification information and LOI’s as required. Coordinate grant acceptance activities, contracting, scope-of-work development, billing and reporting to granting agencies.
  • Conduct pre-proposal strategy, development, and budgets in collaboration with colleagues in education, programming, and facilities.
Membership
  • Increase membership at all levels and develop effective strategies for inspiring new members, retaining existing members, and creating compelling benefits and programming in partnership with Director of Education.
  • Provide quarterly reports on Membership activity for ED and Board of Directors.
Board Relations
  • Partner with Executive Director to manage Board Advancement Committee.
  • Help plan and organize committee meetings.
  • Serve as a resource to committee members as they take on the various tasks of cultivation and fundraising.
Other
  • Assist the Executive Director by performing other tasks as needed to support the business of the EHC.
What we are looking for:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • At least seven years successfully driving a significant development program in a nonprofit organization, cultural or educational institution, or equivalent, with a working knowledge of all areas within development, including major gifts, annual giving, membership, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving, capital campaigns and research.
  • Experience with humanities-based organizations is a plus.
  • Specific knowledge of North Shore, Chicago and Illinois philanthropic landscape is a plus.
  • Strong skills with CRM or prospect databases, Google suite, project management software, and similar apps and programs. Excellent analytical skills.
  • Exceptional planning and organization abilities. Able to independently set and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient at creating clear and effective development plans and budgets.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; attentive listener and engaging storyteller.
  • Energetic and skilled networker who enjoys community engagement, attending events and participating in activities to position the EHC for success.
  • A history of working effectively with all people irrespective of their economic status, ethnicity, gender, educational level, or sexual orientation.
  • Flexible and adaptable work style with the ability to work nights and weekends.
