Job Description

About the Controller Role

Cristo Rey San José seeks a Controller who will plan and direct the accounting operations of Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School in conjunction with the Chief Finance and Operations Officer (CFOO).

Reporting to the CFOO the Controller will manage the application of accounting principles and budgeting practices for Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School. This position supports and advises on the accounting and control functions for the school; monitors expenditures and prepares monthly financial statements and analytical reports for the school’s administration; communicates financial information to the CFOO and President; provides technical training and assistance to professional personnel assigned to Cristo Rey’s accounting functions.

The Controller will provide oversight to CRSJ’s financial practices which includes accounting, internal controls, billing, collection, and payroll processing and oversight of the payroll function. The Controller compiles and analyzes quarterly financial statements to maintain the accuracy of these records, alerting the CFOO of any deficiencies or areas of concern. The Controller will prepare a quarterly (or when requested) financial executive summary outlining areas of concerns and meets with the CFOO and President to review and implement a plan of action. This includes income statements, balance sheets, budget variance, tuition receivables, cash management, parish assessment receivable reports and other A/R reports. The Controller will attend school board meetings and report/discuss areas of financial concern to the boards as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that all bills and employee related expenses are submitted and paid on a timely basis.
  • Prepares the annual budget with CFOO and department heads and monitors actual versus budget throughout the fiscal year.
  • Provides monthly financials to the CFOO for review before final monthly close.
  • Oversees and maintains records for all investment accounts in coordination with the CFO office. Requests funding and loans as needed.
  • Oversees the operations of the Accounting Department, which include accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll.
  • Oversees training programs and identifies training needs.
  • Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
  • Oversees the production of periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards.
  • Recommends benchmarks that will be used to measure CRSJ’s performance.
  • Prepare cash flow reports that show YTD Sources and Uses of Cash, along with a forecast for the remaining portion of the fiscal year (as well as subsequent years as needed).
  • Responsible for the recording and reporting of all revenue streams including donations, tuition, corporate partner payments, investment income and in-kind contributions.
  • Provides financial analysis, with emphasis on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Works with external auditors and provides needed information for the annual audit.
  • Files quarterly and annual reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by the CFOO.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates for Controller must have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration required.
  • Ten years or more of related experience required.
  • Certified Public Accountant designation strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with and engage families, including family members for whom English is a second language
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire, lead, manage and work collegially with faculty and staff
  • Demonstrated success as an leader who creates a culture of continuous improvement
  • Evidence of an ability to analyze and use data
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with faculty, staff, parents, students and community member
  • Some level of Spanish proficiency is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient in accounting and tax preparation software (Quickbooks).

SALARY AND COMPENSATION

  • $115,000 - $135,000
  • Full time employees are eligible for the following benefits: medical, dental, vision, and retirement. Employees’ premiums are covered for medical, dental and vision at 100% and dependents at 50% if elected. This position is eligible for enrollment in the group voluntary retirement plan – 403b.
