Job Description

As a Personal Advisor, you will be the primary point of contact ensuring care leavers receive the right level of support. Your role will focus on ensuring a smooth transition into adulthood, understanding and addressing the often complex needs of a care leaver. You will be responsible for ensuring adherence to the relevant legislation, guidance, and regulations within the Children s Act 1989. A passion for supporting and believing in our care leavers is essential, with flexibility in approach being paramount.

Tasks

Role Specific Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Fulfil requirements of the Children s Act 1989 and other relevant legislation concerning children leaving care.
  • Act as a Personal Advisor, providing support, advice, and assistance to young people aged 16-25, including Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking young people.
  • Engage young people in statutory assessments and preparation of pathway plans.
  • Ensure young people are prepared for adulthood by improving their life skills.
  • Empower young care leavers, guiding them to solve their problems.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of education, training, employment, financial entitlements, and housing.
  • Provide young people with practical advice on safety, including sexual health and relationships.
  • Support young people in securing appropriate accommodation.
  • Liaise with services like Youth Justice, Probation, Drug and Alcohol Teams, & Mental Health Services.
  • Understand and provide financial management advice.
  • Be responsible for young people s personal budgets and adhere to financial regulations.
  • Hold and be accountable for an allocated caseload.
  • Keep detailed and up-to-date records of contacts with young people.
  • Safeguard the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults.
  • Maintain awareness of current legislative requirements and participate in relevant training.

Corporate Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Comply with and promote the Council s Health, Wellbeing, and Safety policies.
  • Promote the Council s employment policies, especially concerning diversity, equality, and community involvement.
  • Ensure services align with the Council strategy, vision, aims, and objectives.

Requirements

Essential Behaviours, Abilities, and Knowledge:

  • Professionalism, Leadership, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethical behaviours.
  • Ability to listen without judgment, communicate effectively, think analytically, and work flexibly.
  • Knowledge of child care legislation and procedures, needs of care leavers, and child development.
  • Experience working with young people, assessing risks, and understanding the needs of care leavers.
  • Relevant professional qualification in health, education, housing, or social care NVQ level 3 or equivalent.
