Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION:

This position is responsible for the overall operation of the Special Care Unit (SCU) Department clinical patient care area, patient population, and assigned staff. Core staff-plan accountability for systems function, staff performance, and patient care in the SCU Department.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The individual in this position reports to the Vice President of Nursing/Chief Nursing Officer. This position works closely with the SCU Department staff, medical staff, and all nursing departments in order to provide quality patient care service.

The individual in this position will be required to fully understand the Mission, Vision, Values, and Strategy of Samaritan Healthcare, personifying service and operational excellence. An intuitive understanding of Samaritan's Team Accountability and Respect System (STARS) is expected, including the creation and maintenance of the best patient, employee, physician, and student experience.

This position requires excellent leadership skills with a philosophy of creating a high-trust culture that empowers employees as individual contributors and fosters a strong team environment. Initiative, creativity, and outstanding written and verbal communications are required. Demonstrated ability to find creative solutions to complex problems.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Provides 24-hour patient care services that are safe, effective and patient-focused.

2. Reports problems and risk management issues immediately to ensure appropriate resolution.

3. Manages the budget in a responsible and cost-efficient manner. Identifies unit resources and needs; develops, allocates, administers, and evaluates the unit budget. Monitors expenditures in supplies/equipment/staffing and cost control measures.

4. Functions as a role model in select clinical specialty, demonstrating competency in clinical judgment, technical skills, and appropriate knowledge base.

5. Ensures that patient care/nursing practice meets both safety and legal requirements of the licensing boards/regulatory agencies.

6. Assures nursing units adherence to Samaritan Healthcare/PCS and unit-specific structure standards/policies.

7. Collaborates with Hospitalist to ensure optimal patient care.

8. Keeps current in clinical area of practice in Washington State Department of Health and other regulatory agency changes; shares with PCS staff and implements such changes through the CQI process and unit levels. Actively participates in preparing for and the licensing/credentialing process.

9. Actively participates in Hospital/PCS CQI processes and creates a unit-based quality management system.

10. Participates in the interviewing process for management/administrative staff and new unit staff, and implements strategies directed toward retention/recruitment of employees.

11. Plans and meets staffing needs of unit and the hospital in collaboration with other staffing personnel. Modifies staffing patterns based upon patient volume and acuity to provide safe, effective patient care.

12. Manages the training and development of subordinates through the utilization of performance management.

13. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

14. Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.

15. Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements.

16. Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization's values.

17. Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.

18. Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required, by management be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

1. BSN required or equivalent experience. MSN preferred or MS in Business or Healthcare Administration.

2. Prior experience/expertise for three years in clinical area relevant to unit patient population.

3. Certification in clinical area of expertise preferred.

4. Current Washington State RN license.

5. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (HCP) level to be completed within six (6) months of hire.
