Job Description

Innovation Space Manager

Join an award winning Library! The Schaumburg Township District Library has an onsite, full-time, Innovation Space Manager position open. Are you passionate about fostering creativity, collaboration, and innovation within a library setting? We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic candidate to help design, open, and lead our cutting-edge Innovation Space. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of library services and engage the community in exciting new ways.
Hours are as follows and requires flexibility.

37.5 average hours per week, with days, nights, and weekends as needed.

The schedule is based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. The salary range for this position is $57,155- $71,468; based on skills and qualifications.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Reference Services Department Director, the Innovation Space Manager fosters a creative and user-centered environment, focused on creating programs, services, and outreach opportunities that are engaging and interactive and incorporates the use of instructional technology, maker equipment, and computer-based programming. This position oversees the day-to-day operation of the Innovation Space and is a strong advocate for the use of innovate and creative technologies and equipment in support of the Library’s strategic initiatives of building connections and facilitating future readiness among the members of our community.

Requirements & Skills for the Position:

  • Experience with 3D modeling, rendering, printing, audio-visual equipment and software, laser cutters, and other creative technology tools.
  • Experience with instructional design and delivery.
  • Ability to educate and encourage advocacy for the library.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong emphasis on instruction and public speaking.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated success developing and evaluating educational programs; selecting and successfully operationalizing innovative programs.
  • Experience managing complex projects, resulting in measurable successes and growth.
  • Ability to apply learning theories that support making principals when designing learning activities.
  • Comfortable with a hands-on approach, particularly an ability to improvise with audiences of varied ages, the use of hand tools, electronics, computer software, hardware and various other technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability in physical computing, hardware and software, video and audio production, and desktop fabrication.
  • Demonstrated success building learning experiences and community relationships.
  • Ability to work with colleagues in other departments cooperatively, productively, and positively.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains departmental budgets, reports, statistics and supply inventory.
  • Researches, develops and prototypes innovative activities and maintains all materials, tools and equipment, including collaborating with the IT department on hardware and software needs.
  • Interviews, selects and trains new employees; trains and makes assignments to subordinates; assists in the evaluation of their performance; and counsels them on the solution of new or difficult problem.
  • Trains library staff on incorporating creative technology into programming.
  • Attends staff meetings and participates in other committee meetings as needed.
  • Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through attendance at and participation in conferences and workshops and through programs of continuing education, professional reading, and participation in professional groups.

Education and/or experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, education, instructional technology, educational technology, computer science, and/or a related degree or a combination of post-secondary education and relevant work experience required.
  • 3 years supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic library organization preferred.
