JOB SUMMARY

Performs procedures in the O.R. associated with scrub functions, as directed by a Registered Nurse and prepares surgical suite and instruments, equipment and supplies to assure a safe patient environment.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education

Completion of an OR Technician Course and is eligible to be certified as such.

Required Skills

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

X Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) Other

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.
  • Willing and able to demonstrate appropriate core competencies annually or as requested.
  • Upholds standard of strict surgical conscious so that patient safety is top priority.
  • Prepares for scheduled surgical cases in a timely fashion assuring that all items have been properly sterilized and are ready to use.
  • Prepares for cases on surgical schedule by assuring all supplies and instruments are available. Reports any discrepancies to manager in a timely fashion to allow time to retrieve all necessary items.

Provides assistances to surgeon during surgical procedures by:

  • Providing appropriate instruments to surgeon as directed.
  • Maintaining complete sterile technique.
  • Participating in instrument, needle, and sponge count as directed.
  • Maintains supplies required for surgical units:
  • Cleans, sterilizes instruments.
  • Maintains knowledge of all re-processing routine and sterilization processes so that, during on call
  • situations and when need demands, surgical tech is capable of working in sterile processing department.
  • Performs terminal cleaning in the Surgical Services Department as required.
  • Assures adequate departmental supplies.
  • Reports any missing or broken instruments to department manager to ensure that replacement equipment is acquired in a timely fashion.
  • Assists with and conducts daily and annual inventories of all surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Appropriately handles all specimens as directed by surgeon. Communicates with circulator to assure proper handling. Reviews specimen's sheet, post procedure, with circulation to assure proper patient and specimen identification.
  • Post procedure, reviews that all items used during procedure have been properly documented in patient medical record for billing and inventory purposes.
  • Completes all training/education required to document competency as to skills orientation list.
  • Accepts on-call schedule as outlined and accepts late assignments as necessary.
  • Demonstrates self-directed learning and participate in continuing education by attendance at scheduled meetings, regular in-services, and the completion of all annual education requirements.
  • Demonstrates awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for personal professional growth.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Support the culture of service excellence throughout the organization.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
