DOE Tableau Programmer Analyst 3 - Replacing NA4340.
*Pls NOTE THE UPDATE: Now 20 hours /week max

UPDATE from Mgr: We have decided to go in a different direction for many of the Tableau projects, but still need someone part-time (20 hour/wk) to do some of the work, including training and mentoring of agency staff. Schedule for that 20 hrs is flexible but must still be within reg work hours.

This remains the same: This position will be remote for the entirety of the assignment. Although the assignment is Remote, if selected, the contractor must agree to work during regular (M-F) hours - nothing after 5pm or on weekends - but now on a PT basis, so they can collaberate with rest of the team.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Office of Research at the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is looking for a senior Tableau Programmer Analyst who will analyze and visualize data to support priority research projects. This position will work collaboratively with agency staff and end users to define visualization requirements, query and analyze data, develop and test visualizations, and maintain documentation. The Senior Tableau Developer will also provide expert technical assistance to agency staff on the use of Tableau Server and Tableau Desktop to develop visualizations. This position is supported by a federal grant to expand the data visualization capacity of the Virginia Longitudinal Data System.

Responsibilities include:
Work collaboratively with end users and technical staff to define requirements, develop appropriate solutions, and create and maintain documentation for dashboards and visualizations;
Understand data structures, develop SQL queries, and rapidly transform raw data into actionable information for visualization development to include supporting the data curation process for agency users;
Champion dashboard quality, consistency, reliability, and public accessibility by applying best practices of visualization design and development;
Collaborate with technical staff to understand and troubleshoot platform issues and develop appropriate solutions;
Spread awareness, provide support, and offer assistance to Tableau Server and Tableau Desktop users throughout the agency;
Contribute to strategic planning meetings and provide guidance on system options and risks; and
Abide by all Department of Education policies as well as state and federal laws and regulations regarding the use, storage, and disposition of restricted-use data.

Required Skills:
Graduation from an accredited college with a four-year degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, Business or a related field.
Five or more years of continuous, focused experience in analytics and visualization development.
Five or more years of experience with Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server.
Three or more years working with data stewards and executive leadership.
Working knowledge of databases, database system structures, and managing complex data from multiple data sources.
Excellent visual skills, including design knowledge such as layout, typography, color, and interaction design;
Proficiency in reading, writing, and editing queries in SQL.
Demonstrated organizational, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences, and attention to detail.
Experience working with education data is highly desirable, but not required.
