Job Description

Duties: The Staff Nurse (R.N.) is a registered professional nurse who delivers, coordinates, & evaluates patient care through collaborative efforts with health team members in accordance with the nursing process & the STANDARDS of care & practices. The Staff Nurse must be able to demonstrate the knowledge & skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety & related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served. Non-exempt position. QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: A minimum of two (2) years experience in a psychiatric health-care facility preferred. Licensure: Currently licensed to practice by the Indiana State Board of Nursing. Additional Requirements: CPR certification & Handle with Care training prior to assisting in a restraining process. Must pass a medication administration exam. Hours of Work: 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.; other times as indicated by immediate supervisor. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES 1. Knowledge of psychiatric & medical nursing procedures essential. 2. Knowledge of Mental Health Laws & Child Abuse/Neglect/Maltreatment reporting laws. 3. Skill in organizing & prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines. 4. Skill in telephone etiquette & paging procedures. 5. Effective oral & written communication skills. 6. Ability to communicate effectively with patients & co-workers. 7. Ability to adhere to safety policies & procedures. 8. Ability to use good judgment & to maintain confidentiality of information. 9. Ability to work as a team player. 10. Ability to demonstrate tact, resourcefulness, patience & dedication. 11. Ability to accept direction & adhere to policies & procedures. 12. Ability to recognize the importance of adapting to the various patient age groups (adolescent, adult & geriatric). 13. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. 14. Ability to meet corporate deadlines. 15. Ability to react calmly & effectively in emergency situations. 16. Knowledge of basic customer service principles. PHYSICAL, MENTAL, & SPECIAL DEMANDS 1. Ability to sit & st& (one-third of the shift) & walk (two-thirds of the shift). 2. Ability to reach above, or below waist height, kneel, bend, stoop, turn, twist & throw (occasionally to frequently). 3. Ability to see well enough to read charts, treatment plans & typewritten materials. 4. Ability to hear well enough to detect noise on the unit & have the ability to discern odors. 5. Ability to frequently push/pull wheeled carts from 100 to 200 lbs. 6. Ability to frequently lift & carry 10 lbs.; occasionally 20 to 50 lbs. 7. Ability to manipulate small & large tools (electric thermometer, telephone, wheelchair, blood pressure cuffs, walkers, paper punch, addressograph, restraints, staplers, EKG machine, copy machine, etc.) 8. Ability to spend 95% of the work day inside in temperature varying from 60 to 90 degrees F., where noise levels range from low to high & the ability to spend 5% of the work day outside in temperature varying from 30 to 110 degrees F. 9. Ability to frequently Handle hazardous/infectious waste. 10. Ability to work in an environment where chemicals are frequently used for cleaning, where medical & electrical hazards may occasionally be present & where dust, mist & steam are frequently generated in housekeeping tasks. 11. Ability to work at a rapid pace & perform a verity of repetitive duties. 12. Ability to response to exposure to blood & body fluids. MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, & OTHER WORK AIDES: 1. Medical & nursing equipment & supplies. 2. Telephone & paging systems. 3. Policies, procedures, plans & program manuals. 4. Alco Sensor 5. Gluco Meter 6. Medication Administration Record 7. Blood Pressure Cuff 8. Wheelchair 9. Patient Restraints 10. Thermometer 11. Copy Machine

Skills: Bachelor's Degree - Desired CPI preferred per facility - Highly desired CPR certification & Handle with Care training - Required Currently licensed to practice by the Indiana State Board of Nursing. - Required Experience in a psychiatric health-care facility - Desired: 2 Years Graduate from an accredited program of professional nursing - Required MAB preferred per facility - Highly desired Must pass a medication administration exam. - Required

Education: Education: Graduate from an accredited program of professional nursing required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
