ASSOCIATE COUNSEL - INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

Responsibilities
Our company is seeking an attorney to join our corporate legal organization as Associate Counsel Intellectual Property. This position will report to and work closely with the Chief Intellectual Property Counsel in providing strategic leadership of intellectual property (IP) matters including trade secrets, patents, trademarks and copyrights.

With our hybrid work model that currently includes 3 days onsite and 2 days remote, you'll have the benefits of a collaborative environment with increased flexibility. Our team is open to adding new talent based out of Pittsburgh, PA at our corporate headquarters, or onsite at one of our manufacturing facilities in the Cleveland, OH or Whitehall, MI areas.
Major Activities/Key Challenges:
- Leads monthly business unit patent committee meetings to: (a) review new invention disclosures and make recommendations as to whether to approve for patenting or trade secreting; (b) decide whether to foreign file counterpart patent applications; and (c) make patent/trademark annuities decisions.
- Partners with outside counsel to conduct inventor interviews and reviews and approves all patent applications and prosecution filings globally, acting as an interface between outside counsel and the company's business units.
- Performs monthly patent searches for competitive technologies and reviews with the applicable business unit.
- Provides client counseling, training and guidance on IP related issues in general commercial and transactional issues, as well as global trademark prosecution.
- Proactively implements established Corporate Policies and Procedures related to the protection of intellectual property and makes recommendations for the improvement of IP procedures.
- Assists in the management of outside intellectual property counsel and serves as an interface between outside counsel and the company's business units.
- Keeps abreast of new IP legislation globally that might impact the business operations of the Company and its interests in the U.S. and abroad, and works to interpret and assist business units in complying with and/or understanding the potential impact to the business.
- Acts as a thought leader to solve large scale, complex problems.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Law degree (JD) from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA).
- Minimum of 3 years experience practicing as a patent lawyer.
- Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
- Admitted to the Bar of the State of Michigan, State of Ohio, or Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or capable of qualifying for authorized house counsel status.
- Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e., 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Mechanical engineering or metallurgy/chemical engineering undergraduate degree and/or demonstrated experience prosecuting mechanical related inventions.
- Broad base of Intellectual Property law experience with trade secrets, patents, trademarks and copyrights.
- Excellent leadership and client relationship skills, including the ability to influence others, foster teamwork, and drive for results and change within a large and complex organization.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
