Roles and responsibilities
The Assistant Manager of Marine Life Operations supports and supervises the daily activities of the Marine Life Operations Facility. This role involves managing the land-based coral farm and coordinating various activities such as donor collection, fragging, coral production, and delivery to the Marine Life Institute’s Grand Reveal and other exhibits. Additionally, the role includes overseeing logistical and operational activities and managing the MLOF team.
Job Responsibilities
1. Facility Management:
- Operate the ex-situ Marine Life Operations Facility, ensuring monitoring efforts, facility maintenance, and support for team members, interns, and researchers.
- Perform daily husbandry operations of the Marine Life Operations Facility in adherence to RSG standards and protocols.
- Participate in detailed scientific procedures for coral settlement through colony stages, including husbandry of living cultures and rescue and rehabilitation of marine fauna.
2. Technical Operations:
- Perform basic water chemistry and aquaculture procedures involved in the maintenance of live coral animals and colonies.
- Implement day-to-day maintenance, repair, and minor fabrications related to the aquaculture facility and live systems, including indoor labs, outdoor raceways, fragmentation, and grow-out areas, seawater supplies, and source cultures.
- Maintain clean saltwater aquaria and outdoor aquaculture tanks and raceways to ensure the growth and reproductive viability of endemic and rare corals.
3. Field Operations:
- Conduct field coral activities by boat to reef sites for coral specimen collection, nursery growth, and transportation to pre-approved reef grow-out sites.
- Participate in monitoring and maintenance, and conduct experiments on the farm, recording coral farm and grow-out impacts.
- Handle corals, build structures for coral growth research or facilities support, diving, and mechanical repairs.
4. Team and Project Support:
- Support other team members to ensure the inclusion of diving and underwater tourism-related elements.
- Assist on-site teams in the construction and delivery of Coral Farming & Dive Operation Facility.
- Support pre-opening preparations of the Red Sea Marine Life Institute in coordination with Marine Life Development and Delivery Teams.
5. Policies, Systems, Processes, and Reports:
- Follow relevant functional policies, processes, MLOF standard operating procedures, and instructions to ensure controlled and consistent work.
- Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely functional MIS statements and reports to meet corporate and functional requirements, policies, and standards.
6. Safety, Quality, and Environment:
- Apply safety, quality, and environmental management policies, procedures, and controls to ensure employee safety, legislative compliance, and delivery of high-quality products/services with a responsible environmental attitude.
7. Continuous Improvement:
- Contribute to identifying opportunities for continuous improvement of the department’s systems, processes, and practices, considering international best practices, business process improvement, cost reduction, and productivity improvement.
Desired candidate profile
Qualification and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Aquaculture or Marine Biology (Mandatory)
- PADI Divemaster (preferred), PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent (Mandatory)
- Experience in commercial aquarium or research facility management
- Experience in conservation project management
- Knowledge of animal husbandry, zoo licensing, and veterinary practices
- Commercial diving health and safety
