Job Description

Summary:
The Controller is responsible for the overall management of the Accounting Department at Hampton Roads Transit (HRT). This role oversees all financial activities including payroll accounts payable/receivable financial reporting and compliance with GAAP and funding partner requirements. The Controller works closely with the CFO to achieve HRTs financial goals and requires strong leadership analytical and communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Accounting Department including accounts payable/receivable payroll fixed assets and financial analysis.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies procedures and controls in compliance with GAAP and funding requirements.
  • Analyze financial statements and prepare monthly reports including balance sheets and budget variance analysis.
  • Manage financial audits compliance audits and triennial reviews with federal state and independent auditors.
  • Supervise the Assistant Controller accounting staff and financial analysts while providing clear direction and monitoring performance.
  • Ensure accuracy of the general ledger reconciliations and subsidiary ledgers.
  • Communicate financial policies across departments and provide guidance on budget vs. actual reports.
  • Design and implement necessary internal controls to improve department efficiency.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting Finance or Business Administration (MBA preferred).
  • CPA or CMA certification required.
  • 510 years of accounting experience including 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g. Pivot Tables VLOOKUP and logical analysis).
  • Knowledge of enterprise fund accounting grants accounting and fixed asset management.
  • Proficiency in software such as Microsoft Office Suite PS Finance and nVision.

Licenses/Certificates:

  • CPA certification required.

Special Requirements:

  • Advanced skills in MS Office applications
