Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

1. Project Support

  • Assist in Project Design: Collaborate with civil engineers in the preparation of project designs, including drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Conduct Site Surveys: Perform site surveys and inspections to gather data for project planning, including measurements, topographic data, and soil samples.

2. Drafting and Documentation

  • Prepare Technical Drawings: Use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create and modify technical drawings and plans for construction projects.
  • Maintain Project Documentation: Organize and maintain project documentation, including reports, plans, contracts, and correspondence.

3. Fieldwork

  • Site Inspections: Conduct inspections of construction sites to ensure compliance with design specifications, safety regulations, and quality standards.
  • Monitor Construction Activities: Observe construction activities and assist in ensuring that work is carried out according to approved plans and schedules.

4. Technical Analysis

  • Data Analysis: Analyze collected data and prepare reports on findings to assist engineers in making informed decisions.
  • Assist in Calculations: Support engineers in performing calculations related to load, materials, and costs, and assess structural integrity.

5. Quality Control

  • Testing and Sampling: Conduct tests and take samples of construction materials (e.g., concrete, soil) to assess quality and compliance with standards.
  • Implement Quality Assurance Procedures: Help implement quality assurance procedures to ensure that all work meets established quality standards.

6. Communication and Coordination

  • Liaison with Stakeholders: Serve as a point of contact between engineers, contractors, and clients, communicating project progress and addressing concerns.
  • Collaborate with Team Members: Work closely with other technicians, engineers, and construction personnel to facilitate project execution.

7. Regulatory Compliance

  • Adhere to Regulations: Ensure that all activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as industry standards.
  • Environmental Considerations: Assist in ensuring that environmental considerations are integrated into project planning and execution.

8. Problem-Solving

  • Identify Issues: Identify potential problems during construction and propose solutions or alternatives to mitigate issues.
  • Support Decision-Making: Provide technical insights and recommendations to engineers and project managers to support decision-making.

Desired candidate profile

1. Education

  • Associate’s Degree: A degree in civil engineering technology, construction technology, or a related field from an accredited institution is typically required.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications (such as Certified Engineering Technician (CET)) can be advantageous and demonstrate a commitment to professional development.

2. Experience

  • Relevant Work Experience:
    • Typically 1-3 years of experience in civil engineering or construction, with exposure to various types of projects (e.g., infrastructure, residential, commercial).
  • Internships or Co-ops: Practical experience gained through internships or cooperative education programs is beneficial.

3. Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in CAD Software: Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D) for drafting and design purposes.
  • Understanding of Engineering Principles: Knowledge of civil engineering principles, materials, and construction methods.
  • Field Equipment Skills: Experience with surveying instruments (e.g., total stations, GPS equipment) and testing equipment (e.g., concrete testing kits).

4. Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

  • Critical Thinking: Strong analytical skills to assess data, identify problems, and propose effective solutions in construction and design processes.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to focus on details to ensure accuracy in measurements, calculations, and documentation.

  • Organizational Abilities: Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet project deadlines.
  • Basic Project Management Knowledge: Familiarity with project management principles, including scheduling and resource allocation.
