ABOUT SDSN

The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has been operating since 2012 under the auspices of the UN SecretaryGeneral. SDSN mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development including the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. We aim to accelerate joint learning and promote integrated approaches that address the interconnected economic social and environmental challenges confronting the world.

SDSN works closely with United Nations agencies multilateral financing institutions the private sector and civil society. It is directed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs and operates through offices in New York Paris and Kuala Lumpur.


ABOUT THE SCIENCE PANEL FOR THE CONGO BASIN

The Science Panel for the Congo Basin (SPCB) was launched on 3rd December 2023 at COP28 in Dubai. The SPCB is an independent platform for scientists from the region to synthesize the existing knowledge including Indigenous peoples and autochthonous knowledge on the functioning of and threats to the Congo Basin and its ecosystems.

Led by and comprised primarily of leading scientists from the region the SPCB will undertake a comprehensive synthesis of the available scientific knowledge on the Congo Basin including Indigenous peoples and autochthonous knowledge to generate a highquality independent assessment report to be presented at COP30.


POSITION SUMMARY

This position will support and report to the Science Officer of the Science Panel for the Congo Basin and the Vice President of the Americas & the New York Office. The incumbent provides a wide range of duties. Primary responsibilities include compiling GIS data and maps for different sections of the upcoming assessment report on the Congo Basin.

For example initial maps proposed by the CoChairs of the Science Panel for the Congo Basin include the following: 1. Forest cover map of the Congo Basin (with different land uses); 2. Land Elevation maps for major ecological zones of the Congo Basin; 3. Major water bodies this does not have to have habitats but just lakes and rivers and how they are laid; 4. Human settlements of more than 100000 inhabitants; and 5. Protected areas if at all possible across the Congo Basin.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent will compile GIS data and create maps for the SPCB assessment report.

QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelors Degree (completed or currently enrolled) in sustainable development biology ecology climatology geography forestry anthropology economics or a related discipline is required; Masters Degree (completed or currently enrolled) is preferred.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word Excel and PowerPoint) and Google Office (Sheets Docs Forms etc.)
  • Must be proficient in GIS.
  • Accuracy strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and writing skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure on competing responsibilities with resilience discretion and diplomacy.
  • Passion for the mission of the SDSN.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and international team environment.
  • English fluency required. Fluency in French is an asset.


IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Location: The position reports to the SDSN Office in New York City but can be conducted remotely.

Travel: None.

Contract Length: June 3rd 2024 August 30 2024

Salary Range: Hourly wage of $1619 depending on qualifications. 15 hours per week.

Reports to: Science Officer of the Science Panel for the Congo Basin

Work authorization: SDSN does not sponsor visas and therefore applicants must have proper authorization to work in the United States. SDSN is required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to secure verification of eligibility to work in the United States.
